With the advent of the internet and digital communications many thought amateur radio (hams) had fallen off the face of the earth. But the reality is that amateur radio still provides one of the most reliable forms of emergency communications on the airwaves (not to mention it's a lot of fun).
With the local mountains dotted with repeater systems, and radio's linked to the internet, the world of amateur radio is limitless. Today many CERT teams in San Diego County have found that licensed amateur radio operators add versatility to the team in times of disaster communications.
In July (2013) classes will be offered to assist you in obtaining your license, and yes, you do need a license to broadcast on the amateur radio bands. So join in the fun and sign up for the class. It's always good to know you have that back-up communications in times of emergencies.
