Dehesa-

On Sunday, October 13th, 2013 at 8:13 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received an automatic aid request to respond Rescue 3 to the area of Dehesa Rd and Matamo Pl. Initial reports indicated a high-speed head-on collision with multiple injured parties. Dispatched to the incident were three structural engines, two rescue companies, one ALS medic unit, and a CAL Fire duty chief.

Firefighter-Paramedics from multiple agencies work to stabilize a critically injured occupant. The red fluid on the ground is automatic transmission fluid.
With the arrival of Engine 23 (San Miguel Fire-Dehesa Station) they indicated a number of moderately (to severely) injured parties with an entrapment. The process of sorting, and treating, the victims began. Command was assumed by a CAL Fire chief officer where the task of organizing the incident was initiated.

Type of damage that results from a high speed head-on collision. Note the deployed airbag.
On the arrival of Engine 63 and Medic 63 (Sycuan Fire) extrication, and treatment of the victims, continued. The crew from Engine 63 was able to free the trapped victim with rescue tools carried on the engine.  The crew from Rescue 3 was assigned to assist with the treatment of a critically injured patient.

A request was made for Mercy Air to respond and transport the critically injured victim to the trauma center at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Head-On Vehicle Collision Closes Wildcat Canyon Road

Wildcat Canyon Rd-

On Tuesday, August 13th, 2013 at 8:12 AM, the Heartland Communications Center received emergency calls about a head-on collision on Wildcat Canyon Road just below Stelzer County Park. Two engine companies, one rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and the Lakeside duty chief responded to the incident.

Debris field left from the collision.
On the arrival of Chief Tockstein he reported that the vehicles had traffic totally shut-down, and that the two vehicles were separated by about 100 feet. With the arrival of engine companies and medic units it was quickly determined that one patient would need care at the Sharp Memorial Trauma Center, while the other patient could go to Grossmont Hospital.

The crew from Engine 1 and Medic 3 work on one of the occupants.
A BLS ambulance was requested while Medic 3 quickly loaded the patient that met trauma center criteria. AMR responded an ambulance which transported the other patient to Grossmont.

The force of the collision completely removed the wheel and suspension from the drivers side.
As a result of the accident Wildcat Canyon Road was closed for an extended period while crews conducted EMS operations, and the vehicles could be removed from the roadway. CHP is currently investigating the incident.

Without a doubt this is another "airbag save." Had these vehicles not been equipped with advanced airbag systems this would have been a fatality accident.

A total of 9 Lakeside personnel responded to the incident. Lakeside was assisted by Santee Fire.

Lakeside Firefighters Receive Sheriff's "Distinguished Service Award"

MCAS Miramar, Bob Hope Theater-

Little did fire crews reporting to work on a September day know they would soon be involved in a shoot out between Sheriff Deputies and a suspect in the 12700 block of Mapleview Street. Deputies from the Santee Sheriff office had developed a lead that possible child abuse was occurring in a local apartment complex. Acting on that information the deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect. Soon shots rang out leaving both deputies injured from gunshot wounds. Deputies returned fire while seeking refuge from the continued gunfire.

A call for assistance was made which brought a response from law enforcement throughout San Diego County. Responding law enforcement officials continued to receive gunfire from the apartment. At the same time the Lakeside Fire Protection District received a call to respond to the incident for the injured officers. An engine company and medic unit responded from the River Park, and Lake Jennings fire stations.

San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore makes the award presentation to Captain-Paramedic John Hisaw, Firefighter-Paramedic Danny Leetch, Firefighter-Paramedic Jamie Hazlewood, and Firefighter Paramedic Eric Stamm. Not present was Fire Engineer Rob Andrews.
Knowing that two deputies had suffered life threatening injuries a plan was put into action that would involve fire crews operating under the cover of law enforcement. Crews entered the complex and quickly located the two officers. They were removed to a safe area where advanced life support could be initiated. But it became obvious that both of these patients needed quick transport to the trauma center where definitive care could be initiated.

The most severely injured deputy was loaded into Medic 3 and quickly transported to Sharp Memorial Trauma Center. During the transport the patient received some of the most advanced trauma care allowed in San Diego County.

Calls for additional medic units brought two ALS units from the Santee Fire Department. The second deputy was loaded into an arriving medic unit and was also transported to Sharp Memorial Trauma Center.

As the crime scene was still unfolding the third medic unit staged in the area in anticipation that others may receive injuries. Later that medic unit would be utilized to transport the injured suspect to a local trauma center.

On May 8th, 2013, the San Diego Sheriff Department awarded the "Distinguished Service Award" to Fire Captain-Paramedic John Hisaw, Fire Engineer Rob Andrews, Firefighter-Paramedic Eric Stamm, Firefighter-Paramedic Jamie Hazlewood, and Firefighter-Paramedic Danny Leetch. The award ceremonies took place at MCAS Miramar in the Bob Hope Theater.

Motorcyclist Suffers Major Traumatic Injuries in Crash with a Bus

Pepper Drive Area-

On Sunday, August 19, 2012, at 3:52 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received calls about a motorcyclist that had collided with a bus in the area of North 2nd Street and Pepper Drive. Callers indicated that the victim might be trapped under the bus so a full "vehicle rescue" response was sent. This included a structural engine, a rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and a duty chief.

Firefighters from Lakeside and San Miguel work to stabilize the patient.
The driver on the motorcycle evidently lost control of the bike and slid under the front of a MTS bus that was stopped at a bus stop. Good Planning Helps Locate Downed Rider

El Monte Valley-

On Sunday, July 1st, 2012 at 10:31 AM, the Lakeside Fire District received a call about a rider that had fallen from a horse in the San Diego River bottom. A rescue company and an ALS ambulance was sent to the incident, but based on location a request was made for the duty chief to respond in his four wheel drive vehicle.

Paramedics treat the victim for traumatic injuries.
Fortunately for the patient good planning resulted in locating the victim quickly and initiating medical care. In this situation the rider was not alone which resulted in a quick call to 911 after the incident. Also the second rider was able to meet the first responders on El Monte Rd and direct them to the patient. All too often riders, and hikers, are out alone and are unable to assist with their rescue, thus crews have to spend time in just locating the victim. Also, never rely totally on a cell phone. There are areas in this valley where cell phones are rendered useless due to coverage issues. Also, in the event that your medical situation compromises your ability to use a phone, it too can result in delays.

In this situation the victim was quickly located by crews and treated for possible fractures. The victim was transported to a local ER via M3.

Rescue on Ashwood Street

Lakeside-

On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 4:52 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received calls reference a traffic collision in the 10400 block of Ashwood Street. One structural pumper, one rescue company, and an ALS medic unit were dispatched to the scene. Enroute to the incident, additional information was received that one of the cars was overturned and the driver was trapped. The call was upgraded to a "rescue response" which brought a response from 4106 (Division Chief Kirkpatrick).

Firefighter-Paramedic Chris Williams works in the interior of the vehicle.
On the arrival of Engine 2 (Riverpark Fire Station), firefighters discovered a female occupant trapped in her badly damaged sedan. The crew accessed the vehicle and initiated medical care to the sole occupant. On the arrival of Rescue 3 and Medic 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station), the car was stabilized and the process of disentanglement began.

As firefighters started with their initial plan, the patient complained that she was having additional pain with the movement of the car. Crews switched gears and elected to remove the back door and the back of the seat that she occupied. Crews were able to remove the victim with this procedure. New hydraulic rescue cutters, recently purchased with a grant, were used to cut through "new technology metals."

Firefighter-paramedics assessed the victim and determined that her injuries would require evaluation at Sharp Memorial Trauma Center. The patient was transported via Lakeside Medic 3.

The CHP is currently investigating the accident. A total of 9 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident.
