Fully-Involved Motorhome Brings Full Response in Lakeside

Lakeside, CA -

A motorhome on fire next to an occupied residence required a full structure fire resource response in the Glenview area of the Lakeside Fire District on Sunday, October 12, 2014. Initially dispatched as a large vehicle fire (two engines and a duty chief), Heartland Fire Communications dispatchers quickly upgraded the incident to a structure fire resource assignment (four engines, one truck, one medic, two chiefs) as additional calls and information were received.

Lakeside Engine 3 (Lake Jennings fire station) was on scene in just over six minutes reporting heavy smoke showing from the rear of a single-family residence. Engine 3 Captain Wes Barnes assumed Incident Command (IC) and ordered multiple hoselines to be stretched to protect the adjacent homes and attack the fully-involved motorhome in the backyard. The rapid response coupled with the aggressive actions of the first-in companies confined the fire to motorhome and kept the fire from extending to nearby homes.

Lakeside Fire would like to acknowledge our automatic-aid partners for their timely assistance in fighting this dangerous fire. Assisting agencies attending this incident included: E4, T4 (Santee); E8 (Heartland Fire-Rescue); Chief 4801 (Barona). Lakeside unit response included : E3, E1, OES305, M2, Div.4105, Div.4104, Chief 4101. San Diego Sheriff's deputies also assisted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighter-Paramedic Josh Raczka mops-up the motorhome.

Sterling Fire Threatens area Structures

Glenview-

On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at 4:59 p.m. the Heartland Communications Center received a report of a vegetation fire in the area of the 12900 block of Highway 8 Business in the Glenview area. Given the severe weather conditions, a high wildland response was dispatched which sends multiple resources to the fire.

On the arrival of Lakeside Division Chief Chuck Tockstein, he found a fire on the south side of the highway making a run towards the north. Within minutes the fire had jumped Highway 8 Business and was making an uphill run towards multiple homes in the Sterling Drive and Jackson Hill Drive areas. An immediate request was placed for a strike team of engines to respond to those areas and take up structural defense positions.

Firefighters took up positions to start hose lays to cut off further extension of the fire. But in the midst of the fire attack there was a wind change which now sent the fire towards homes in the 13000 block of Highway 8 Business. Another strike team was requested and took up structural defense positions in a nearby mobile home park.

Due to multiple campaign fires in the San Diego County area there was no air assets or hand crews available to assist.

Crews continued to advance hose lays around the fire and at 6:57 p.m. the Incident Commander declared that the forward progress of the fire had been stopped. Although the active burning had stopped, firefighters now faced the task of an extensive overhaul. A number of crews spent the night on the line overhauling hot spots and patrolling the fire area.

Overhaul extended well throughout the daylight hours the next day. Crews continued to overhaul hot spots and remove trees that had created a hazard. The Lakeside Logistic Volunteers provided fire support throughout the incident.

This burn pattern is know by firefighters as "Moonscaping." It's when everything in the fire's path is consumed. This is normally seen in August, not May.
During this incident Lakeside Fire received assistance from:

  • Alpine Fire
  • Heartland Fire & Rescue
  • Santee Fire
  • Sycuan Fire

Lakeside Fire Crews Kept Busy with Multiple Vegetation Fires

Lakeside, CA -

Lakeside fire crews had an unusually busy day on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, when a rash of vegetation fires occurred in the Glenview area of Lakeside.

At 4:46 p.m., firefighters responded to a vegetation fire in the creek bed in the area of Los Coches Rd and Via Diego. The fire burned out a swath of heavy fuel on the west side of Los Coches Rd and skirted behind the homes located on Calle Lucia. Crews were able to quickly control the flames with no damage to nearby structures.

At 8:26 p.m., crews received a call for another vegetation fire on the east side of Los Coches Rd near Via Diego. Firefighters worked their way into the area to discover a new fire area with a nearby spot fire. Fire managers requested additional assistance which brought units from CalFire, Alpine Fire, and Sycuan Fire. Fortunately, crews were able to quickly control the fire without local damage.

Then, at 6:21 a.m., on Thursday morning, crews received a report of another fire in the creek area off of the 13700 block of Highway 8 Business. Due to the damp morning conditions the fire was held to a small spot and was quickly controlled.

An early morning fire smolders in the moist air. Under different conditions this fire could have been much worse.
All the fires are currently under investigation and while no connection has been established between the three fires, local residents are always asked to be vigilant in reporting suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Car Fire Lights Up the Sky

Glenview-

On Tuesday, April 15th, 2014 at 12.02 a.m., the Heartland Communications Center received a 911 call reference a vehicle fire in the WalMart parking-lot in the 13400 block of Camino Canada (Glenview area).

Firefighter-Paramedic Josh Wilson pulls an attack line on the fire.
On the arrival of Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station) they discovered a well involved sedan in the middle of the parking area. Fortunately no other cars had parked adjacent to the fire scene so the fire was isolated to a single car. Sheriff deputies had arrived just prior to the engine's arrival and checked that no occupants remained in the vehicle.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle is considered a complete loss.

Vehicle Accident Creates Complex Problems

Glenview-

On Wednesday, February19, 2014, at 11:19 a.m. the Heartland Communications Center received a 911 call reference a car that had driven through a carport and was on a slope above other homes in the 13400 block of Highway 8 Business. The caller stated that the occupant was still in the vehicle in an extremely unstable location. A rescue response was initiated that sent one structural engine, one rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and two chief officers.

The vehicle sits perched on a retaining wall on the property below.

The victim is removed from the vehicle and evaluated by crews below.
On the arrival of Rescue 3, and Medic 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station), firefighters located a vehicle about thirty feet down an embankment resting on a retaining wall below. The crew from Rescue 3 attached a winch cable to the vehicle to stabilize it while the crew from Engine 8 (Heartland Fire & Rescue) and Medic 3 accessed the victim and removed him from the vehicle.

The vehicles final resting spot. A fortunate deployment of the airbag probably helped in preventing serious injuries.
As plans were made to remove the vehicle it was quickly discovered that a gas main and possibly underground electrical could be compromised as the car was pulled up the hill. After discussing the issues with the property management, the decision was made that the Rescue 3 crew would cut the gas piping to prevent further damage. As the car crested the embankment it was suddenly evident that the carport was in the way and required partial dismantling. To execute this plan the rescue crew would have to construct shoring to transfer the weight of the roof. Crews constructed a spot shore that allowed the uprights to be removed.

Rescue 3 crew constructed shoring to prevent collapse of the carport.
A total of 6 Lakeside personnel responded to the incident. Lakeside was assisted by Heartland Fire & Rescue and the Barona Fire Department. Crews from SDG&E responded to assist fire crews in evaluating hazards. CHP is investigating the incident.

Vehicle Damages Structure on Los Coches Road

Lakeside-

On Thursday, January 30th, 2014 at 2:03 a.m. the Heartland Communications Center received a 911 call reference a vehicle that had just struck a structure in the 8800 block of Los Coches Road. Assigned to the alarm were three structural engines, a truck company, an ALS medic unit, and a chief officer.

On the arrival of Engine 3 and Medic 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station) they discovered a vehicle that had struck a residential structure with sufficient force to breech the wall. Crews initiated a medical assessment on the driver while other crews entered the structure to look for additional victims. On inspection of the interior of the building it was discovered that the impact had narrowly missed a crib occupied by a small child. Much to the relief of crews the child was unharmed.

One patient was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Crews remained on-scene till the vehicle could be removed from the structure. The accident is currently being investigated by CHP.

Fire Crews Tackle Midnight River Bottom Fire

Glenview-

Fire crews from multiple agencies responded to a river bottom fire in the 13400 block of Highway 8 Business. The Heartland Communications Center started receiving multiple calls about a fire in the Los Coches Creek area that was quickly approaching structures in a nearby mobile home park. The Heartland Communications Center dispatched three structural engines, one brush engine, a water tender, ALS medic unit, and a chief officer to the 12:33 a.m. fire.

Lakeside Engine 3 working the fire.

Crews arriving from Fire Station #3 (Lake Jennings) reported flames as high as 50' burning in the dead vegetation. Crews took up positions to protect threatened structures while other crews worked to extinguish the fire. The fire was burning in deep layers of dead Arundo that tends to accumulate in waterways since it's introduction into the ecosystem.

It took crews 90 minutes to completely extinguish, and overhaul the fire.

A total of 12 Lakeside personnel responded to the fire, assisted by crews from Heartland Fire & Rescue. Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire Crew Returning from Hospital Gets a Big Surprise

Glenview-

Engine Company 3 (Lake Jennings Station) was returning from the hospital, after transporting a critically injured victim, when they stumbled across a fully engulfed semi truck fire. On 10/11/13, at 8:25 pm, Engine 3 was eastbound on Interstate 8 east of Greenfield Drive when the crew noticed an orange glow reflecting off the hillside down the freeway. As they crested the hill they discovered a semi truck (tractor) fully involved in flames.

Fire Captain Rick Dalldorf looks over fire damage to the battery area of the truck.
After notifying the Heartland Communications Center of their sudden discovery, additional engines were sent from Lakeside Fire and Heartland Fire & Rescue. A request was also made for the water tender to respond from the River Park Fire Station.

Because the crew had no prior knowledge of the fire they had to quickly don safety gear on the edge of the freeway and pull attack lines. After a short attack on the fire the flames had been knocked down and the process of overhaul could begin.

Cause of the fire is under investigation. Lakeside Fire was assisted by Heartland Fire & Rescue and Barona Fire. The driver, and occupant, escaped without injury.

Semi Truck Fire Closes Off Ramp

Glenview-

On Thursday, September 19, 2013, at 1:45 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received a call about a semi-truck fire in the area of Interstate 8 (westbound) at Los Coches Road. Initially dispatched were two structural engines and a chief officer.

Firefighter-Paramedic Eric Stamm calls for water. The fire would require about 300 gallons to fully extinguish the flames.
Upon departing the Lake Jennings Fire Station, firefighters could see a building column of smoke in the area. Crews requested CHP in anticipation that traffic may be affected by the fire.

Drivers patiently wait till the road could be re-opened.
On arrival of Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station), firefighters discovered a flat-bed semi truck with the rear wheels on fire. The truck driver originally stopped on the freeway but was worried the fire might spread to the vegetation so he continued down the off-ramp until he was clear of the brush. Firefighters pulled attack lines and started the process of cooling the brakes to a point that they would not reignite the tires. After the application of about 300 gallons of water, the fire was fully extinguished. Crews worked to contain runoff so it would not enter the waterways.

As a result of the fire, the Los Coches Road off-ramp was closed for about 15 minutes while fire fighting operations continued.

The fire was determined to be related to a mechanical failure in the braking system. A total of 7 Lakeside personnel responded to the incident.

Vegetation Fire Threatens Structures in Lakeside

Glenview-

On Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 2:14 p.m., the Heartland Communications Center began to receive emergency calls about a vegetation fire in the 12900 blk of Highway 8 Business. Initially dispatched were two brush engines, three structural engines, an ALS medic unit, and two duty chiefs.

Fire starting to make the uphill run from Highway 8 Business.
As firefighters were en-route, additional calls were received stating the fire was quickly growing in size. Responding units could see a building column of smoke so a request was made for additional engines and the helicopter out of Gillespie Field.

With the arrival of the first Lakeside duty chief (Tockstein) about a quarter acre had been consumed and the fire was making a hard push to the east. It soon became evident that this fire was likely to get much larger, and eventually threaten structures. A request was made for an immediate need brush strike team, and a strike team of structural engines.

In addition a request was made for the water tender out of Sycuan and the Lakeside Logistic Volunteers (4140).

The fire continued on an easterly path making a run towards Interstate 8 and the homes off of Amelia Drive. The decision was made to evacuate structures on Amelia Drive, so San Diego County Sheriff Deputies went door-to-door notifying the residents of the approaching fire.

Structural engines were sent to threatened structures on Amelia Drive and Cindy Lynn Lane. The fire bumped a number of structures but pre-positioned companies were able to quick knock down the flames. Some out-buildings received damage but no residential structures were lost. Much of the credit goes to the property owners, and CalTrans, who created defensible space between their homes and the fuels. Had the fuel been allowed to grow unchecked it's likely there would have been significant structural losses.

Fire heading towards structures on Amelia Drive.
Firefighters were also sent to Interstate 8. There was some concern that the fire could spot over the freeway and get established on the south side of the freeway.  Lakeside entered into Unified Command with CalFire (Howell) due to the threat to the State Responsibility Land.

With the arrival of San Diego County Copter 10 and 12, a number of precision drops slowed the forward progress towards the homes. Ground crews were able to eventually surround the fire and at 3:56 p.m. the fire was declared "contained." A CalFire bulldozer and hand crews cut line around the fire.

Two firefighters were transported to local hospitals with heat related injuries. The fire has held to 18 acres.

Note the defensible space.

Lakeside Fire was assisted by: CalFire, Heartland Fire-Rescue, Sycuan Fire, and Santee Fire. This is another example how automatic and mutual aid works to protect all citizens in San Diego County.

Lakeside Structure Fire Sends Three to UCSD Burn Center

Glenview-

On Friday, December 23, 2011, at 4:36 a.m., the Heartland Communications Center received an urgent phone call from the occupants of a structure fire stating that their travel trailer was on fire and they were unable to exit the dwelling. Dispatchers stayed on the line prompting the occupants to "get out." In response to the call, five engine companies, one truck company, one ALS medic unit, and two division chiefs were sent to the fire in the 13400 block of Highway 8 Business.

On the arrival of Engine 3 and Medic 3, firefighters discovered SDSO deputies moving the occupants away from the fire building in fear that stored oxygen cylinders may explode. Two victims were suffering from severe smoke inhalation and were in need of immediate medical intervention. A third victim showed mild signs of smoke inhalation.

Firefighter-Paramedic Eric Stamm and Firefighter Reserve Patrick Sellers care for one of the smoke inhalation patients.
A request for an additional medic unit was made which brought a response from Lakeside Medic 1. After receiving initial advanced life support at the scene all three victims were transported to UCSD for further evaluation.

Multi-Agency Response Holds Vegetation Fire to Half Acre

Glenview-

On Thursday, October 13th, 2011 at 7:50am, the Heartland Communications Center started to receive multiple calls about a vegetation fire in the area of Highway 8 Business and Aurora Drive. The initial response included engines from Lakeside, El Cajon, and CalFire.

Firefighters from Lakeside and CalFire stop forward fire spread on Division Zulu.
On the arrival of Battalion 1 (Laff) a "large spot" of heavy vegetation was burning up slope through an open field that lies between the interstate and Highway 8 Business. Additional brush engines and aerial support was requested. This sent additional equipment from Lakeside, San Miguel Fire Districts, and Copter 10 and 12.

Initially progress was slow due to steep terrain, but crews later used ladders to access the fire area. Although weather conditions were ideal for a fire, the lack of winds kept the fire spread to a minimum. Eventually crews were able to stop forward progress at a half acre. Crews were then tasked with cutting a fire control line around the perimeter.

Witnesses were able to identify a suspect in connection with the fire. Sheriff deputies arrested the suspect near the scene.

Dispatched Lakeside units: E3 (Lake Jennings), BR26 (Blossom Valley), B1, BR2 (Eucalyptus Hills), 4103, El Cajon units: E8 (Madison Ave), CalFire units: 3382 (Flinn Springs), San Miguel units: BR23 (Dehesa Rd).

What are Divisions?
Divisions are geographical segments of a vegetation fire. Breaking the fire down into these smaller segments makes managing the fire more effective as the Incident Commander only needs to communicate with a limited number of managers. As the fire grows in size additional Divisions can be assigned.

Typically when an initial commander pulls up to the fire the left flank is known as Alpha, while the right flank is called Zulu....

Vegetation Fire Extends into Structure

Glenview-

On Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 8:51 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received calls reference a vegetation fire in the 13200 blk of Aurora Dr. Callers reported that the fire had extended into a patio area and was threatening structures.

Reserve Firefighter David Csik extends an attack line to the still smoldering deck area.
On the arrival of Battalion 1 (Laff), he discovered a small brush fire that had extended into the deck area of an adjoining structure. Fortunately local residents armed with garden hoses were able to keep the fire from extending further into the structure. Upon the arrival of Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station), a hoseline was pulled and the area was overhauled.

Damage to the deck area from this small fire was significant
A point to remember: Even though this is a small area, it doesn't take much to suffer structural damage when clearance (green zone) is inadequate

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Approximately $1000 of structural damage occurred.

Dispatched Lakeside Fire units: E3, E1, E2, B1, M1; San Miguel unit: B23;CalFire unit: E3382

Engine 3 Handles Vehicle Fire

Camino Canada -

A vehicle fire in the parking lot of the Denny's restaurant brought the C-division crew from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) on the morning of September 1, 2011. Despite bystander attempts to extinguish the fire with several dry chemical extinguishers, the engine compartment was well-involved with fire on the arrival of Engine 3. Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and knocked-down the fire with a preconnected hoseline and water from Engine 3's booster tank.

Upon investigation, it appeared that the engine compartment had several nests of grass and dry leaves (probably rat or mice nests). The hot engine parts ignited the vegetation, sparking the fire.

Lakeside firefighter Shawn McKenna cools-off the engine compartment.
