Lakeside Firefighters Extinguish Structure Fire

El Monte Valley -

Just after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2016, Heartland Fire Communications received numerous reports of a fire on the northeast end of the El Monte Valley in Lakeside. Because of the remote nature of area, the initial report was for a vegetation fire. While enroute the incident, Lakeside Division 4105 (Molloy) was updated with additional information suggesting a probable structure fire. Chief Molloy added additional units to the response and arrived on scene reporting a large outbuilding well-involved with fire extending to the surrounding vegetation. Lakeside Engine 3 (Lake Jennings) arrived and quickly stretched a handline to attack the fire. Engines 2 (River Park) and 26 (Blossom Valley) also arrived and assisted.

In this area of the fire district there is no municipal water system (and therefore, no fire hydrants). In order to ensure an adequate water supply for firefighting operations, the district water tender (WT7251) is automatically dispatched as part of any fire response in this area. The total amount of water delivered to the scene with the initial response to this fire exceeded 3000 gallons.

The fire was quickly knocked down and extension was limited to a small area of vegetation. Additional responding resources included: E4, Br4 (Santee); Division 4103, Chief 4101, M3 (Lakeside). Also assisting were several San Diego Sheriff Deputies. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Smoke was visible from a distance.

Lakeside CERT and CVG Radio Map El Monte Valley

Lakeside CERT and CVG members brief prior to taking to the field
On Sunday, July 13, volunteers spent their afternoon serving the citizens of Lakeside in a rather unusual way…grabbing HAM radios and driving throughout El Monte Valley. The effort was to “map” the valley for amateur radio communications in the event of a significant emergency.

Radio communication is often affected by terrain. Knowing where radio “dead spots” are located, as well as areas of strong communication, can make all the difference in a disaster. Having these locations mapped in advance can save valuable time and assist in saving lives.

Radio signal strength is measured in different areas of El Monte Valley
To aid in this effort, members of the Lakeside Fire District’s Communication Volunteer Group (CVG) and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) took to the streets and airwaves in a field exercise. Organized by CVG member Gordon Shackelford, these volunteers drove their personal vehicles to pre-designated spots in the valley and checked out their ability to communicate directly with the “Annex” fire facility located next to the fire station on Lakeside Avenue.

Volunteers were sent to several test locations in the valley
After a couple hours of testing and data collection, the volunteers concluded their efforts and debriefed. The data will be analyzed and eventually displayed on a map in the “Radio Shack” of the Annex. In the event of a major emergency the information on the map will direct CERT and CVG members to areas of good communication to speed response and recovery.

Volunteers check in for signal strength testing
While these volunteers come from two different groups, their objectives are the same - to assist their community in the event of a disaster. CERT personnel are taught disaster response skills such as light rescue and first aid. CVG personnel are tasked with establishing communications on amateur radio bands through a radio network (or “net”) and organize communication between CERT teams in the field. Both programs are vital parts of the District’s disaster response plan and we can’t thank these volunteers enough for their hard work and continued efforts.

Test results were carefully recorded
For more information on both programs, please go to the District’s website www. lakesidefire.net. Information on the monthly “Emergency Net”, can be obtained by emailing radionet@lakesidefire.com.

Early Morning Fire brings Immediate Structure Threat

El Monte Valley-

On Thursday, May 1, 2014, at 6:51 a.m. the Heartland Communications Center received multiple calls about an explosion and brush fire in the area of El Monte Road and Lake Jennings Park Rd. At the time of the call, the Lakeside area was experiencing the third day of significant Santa Ana wind conditions. An augmented initial response was dispatched that sent two brush engines, three structural engines, a water tender, an ALS medic unit, and two chief officers. Simultaneously, CalFire sent multiple companies to the fire.

Responding units could soon see a large loom up of smoke in the area. Soon a wave of 911 emergency calls were received reporting that the structures on Laurel Canyon Road and Vista Laurel Place were being threatened by the fire. An "initial attack" strike team (5 engines and a chief officer) was requested to provide structural defense.

Arriving crews found a well established wind-driven fire that was pushing toward residential structures. Firefighters took up positions on the flank of the fire and on structures in the fire's path. Due to the fierce winds, a number of embers were blown into the housing tract starting a number of small spot fires. Crews assigned to structural defense quickly knocked down those spot fires. There was some minor infrastructure damage to fences in the area; however, there was no direct damage to the exposed structures.

Crews were able to contain the fire at 4 acres. The Lakeside Fire District was in unified command with CalFire. Assistance was provided to Lakeside from CalFire, Santee Fire, and Alpine Fire.

Lakeside Firefighters Assist with Vegetation Fire

El Monte Valley -

A fast-moving vegetation fire drew a multi-agency response to Lakeside on Tuesday, July 2, 2013. Firefighters from Lakeside, Santee, CalFire, and U.S. Forest Service were alerted just after 1:00 p.m. for the fire in steep, rugged terrain just northwest of the El Capitan Reservoir dam.

Because of the difficult access, ground resources assigned to the fire were limited to Type III (wildland) engines, water tenders, and hand crews. Firefighters were assigned to put in two hoselays that extended several thousand feet up the side of El Cajon Mountain. Both hoselays were supported by handcrews including several Interagency Hotshot Crews.

A CalFire S2T makes a steep decent to make a drop on the western perimeter of the fire.
In addition to the ground forces assigned to this incident, several air tankers and helicopters made both fire retardant and water drops to keep the fire in check until ground crews could put in fire line.

The fire was managed utilizing unified command due to the multijurisdictional response. The lead agency was the U.S. Forest Service as the fire was within the boundaries of the Cleveland National Forest.

Lakeside units assigned to this incident included: Chief 4101 (Parr), Division 4105 (Tockstein), Brush 1, Water Tender 7251.

Motorcyclist Flown to Trauma Center from Lakeside

El Monte:  Lakeside firefighters were called on the evening of May 17, 2013 for reports of a motorcyclist that had crashed off road in the El Monte valley and was in need of medical assistance.  Lakeside E3 and M3 were dispatched and with the assistance of the SDSO and the CHP were able to locate the patient in an off road area.  The patient.was determined to be a major trauma and with a prolonged extrication time to overcome the crews decided Mercy Air should be utilized for patient transportation.  E2 was in the area and made access to El Monte Park to land Mercy Air 6.

The flight crew was on the ground and able to quickly take the patient turnover and begin transport to the helicopter when M3 arrived with the patient.  The patient was then transported to an area trauma center by Mercy Air 6.

The combination of the fire department ALS transport and Mercy Air 6 ensured the patient was in a trauma center within the critical "golden hour".

Rollover on Willow Rd

El Monte:  On Thursday August 30, 2012, Lakeside firefighters were dispatched to reports of a rollover traffic collision on Willow Road.  When units from Lakeside Fire Station 2 arrived on scene they found a full-size truck that had rolled over and during the process took out a fence and several small trees.

The vehicle was found back on its wheels with major damage.  A complicating issue with this accident was the fact that there were several fence boards that punctured the windshield and were into the occupancy space in the truck.  The driver of the vehicle was struck by the boards and sustained injuries from them.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to an area trauma hospital.  The cause of the accident is under investigation by the CHP.
