Concrete Truck Vs. Structure in Lakeside

Lakeside: On Thursday, January 20, 2010, at 7:15 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received a call reporting that a concrete truck had rolled down the hill into a residential structure in the 12200 block of Gay Rio Drive. A full rescue response was dispatched including a structural engine, a rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief.

On the arrival of Battalion One (Tockstein), he reported a large commercial vehicle into the dwelling with major structural damage. Fortunately, responding firefighters soon discovered that the driver and occupants were accounted for and unharmed.

Concern soon turned to the stability of the structure. With a major bearing wall missing, there was concern that structural collapse could be an issue. The District called out their USAR-trained personnel (Fire Engineer Joe Vasquez, and Firefighter Nathan Fox) for consultation. There was fear that with the vehicle removed, the garage would be subject to partial collapse and shoring the structure would be necessary.

Fire Engineer Steve Schleif and Firefighter-Paramedic Jose Corona cut lumber to be used as emergency shoring.

Lakeside Fire personnel placed emergency shoring to prevent structural collapse.

Firefighters assembled two vertical spot shores in the garage area when measurements indicated progressive sag in the roof support members. Once the shoring was secured in place the situation stabilized.

A San Diego County Building Department representative yellow tagged the structure.

CHP is investigating the incident. A total of 14 Lakeside Fire personnel were on-scene.
