Lakeside - Engine 1 and Medic 1 stopped by the Montessori Preschool to show some lucky boys and girls their equipment and talk about what they do as firefighters. Captain Beto Lawler explained the importance of knowing when to call 911 and stop, drop, and roll.
Engineer Frank O'Grady then put on all of his protective clothing and demonstrated the stop, drop, and roll technique and showed the children what firefighters look like all dressed up. It's important for kids to see us in our gear so they're not scared of us.
Once the demonstration was over, Firefighter/Paramedics Jamie Hazlewood, Eric Stamm, and Matt Buzzell answered questions from the group. After that, the group was allowed to climb in the fire engine and ambulance and see all the equipment that we use.
The kids had fun handling the equipment, sitting in the seats, and getting to talk to us. Show-and-tells are a great form of education that the fire department likes to do for the community to let the public know what we do, how we operate, and what people should do in emergency situations.
