Mobile Home Fire in Lakeside

Lakeside Farms: On the morning of December 2nd, at 0639 hours, the Heartland Communications Center received calls of a working mobile home fire at the Willowbrook Mobile Estates located at 11949 Riverside Dr. Four engine companies, one truck, a rescue and medic unit, and two Chief Officers were dispatched from the Lakeside Fire DistrictSantee Fire Department, and CAL FIRE. Arriving units found a fully involved coach with exposures on both side of the unit.

Crews initial priorities were to locate the occupants and to confine the fire to the building of origin. Fire Chief Mark Baker took initial command of the fire which was later passed to Battalion Chief Ron Laff.

Crews managed to hold the fire to the single coach, but the effort required the deployment of multiple hose stream. Because of the collective response from so many agencies damage was considered low given the intensity of the fire in close proximity to other dwellings.

Crews were then alerted to the occupant that had suffered thermal injuries. The elderly female occupant was evaluated and transported by Lakeside Paramedics to the UCSD Regional Burn Center in San Diego. Later crews were advised that there was a second victim that had also suffered respiratory and thermal injuries.

This patient involved an off-duty California Highway Patrol Officer that had seen the smoke and drove to the fire location. On his arrival he observed the elderly occupant trying to exit the dwelling with a great degree of difficulty. The officer ran to the landing and carried the occupant to a safe location, but in the process had been exposed to heated gases and radiant heat from the fire. He was evaluated by Lakeside Paramedics and transported to the UCSD Burn Center.

Investigators from the Lakeside Fire District and Sheriff Bomb-Arson
searching for a point of origin and cause.

Investigators from the Lakeside Fire District and the Sheriff's Bomb-Arson Team determined the fire was caused by smoking possibly in the vicinity of medical oxygen . Dollar loss has been set at $100,000
