Rollover Traffic Collision Sends Driver To Trauma Center in Helicopter

Lakeside: 

On Saturday February 7, 2015 Lakeside Firefighters were called to Lake Jennings Park Rd. and Interstate 8 for reports of a rollover traffic collision.  Lakeside Rescue 3 was first on scene and found that a pickup truck had rolled over and the driver had been ejected from the vehicle.  Rescue 3 crews quickly began treating the critically injured patient and determined that it would be in the best interest of the patient to be flown via Mercy Air to a trauma center.

Alpine Engine 17 went to ensure there was a safe landing zone for Mercy Air 6 and Lakeside Engine 26 assisted Rescue 3 on scene with patient care.  When Santee Medic 5 arrived at the scene the patient was quickly loaded and transported to the landing zone to rendezvous with Mercy Air 6.

Engine 17 found an appropriate landing zone in the parking lot at Lake Jennings Park.  Without specific helipads in the district it is necessary that we use large open safe places to land rescue helicopters.  There are many suitable areas, but if a single car is parked in the wrong place it can completely exclude a pre-designated landing zone.  Fortunately, on this particular Saturday, there was plenty of room at the closest possible landing zone.

The patient was transferred to the helicopter and flown to a local trauma center.  California Highway Patrol was on scene and is investigating the cause of the accident.

Fully-Involved Motorhome Brings Full Response in Lakeside

Lakeside, CA -

A motorhome on fire next to an occupied residence required a full structure fire resource response in the Glenview area of the Lakeside Fire District on Sunday, October 12, 2014. Initially dispatched as a large vehicle fire (two engines and a duty chief), Heartland Fire Communications dispatchers quickly upgraded the incident to a structure fire resource assignment (four engines, one truck, one medic, two chiefs) as additional calls and information were received.

Lakeside Engine 3 (Lake Jennings fire station) was on scene in just over six minutes reporting heavy smoke showing from the rear of a single-family residence. Engine 3 Captain Wes Barnes assumed Incident Command (IC) and ordered multiple hoselines to be stretched to protect the adjacent homes and attack the fully-involved motorhome in the backyard. The rapid response coupled with the aggressive actions of the first-in companies confined the fire to motorhome and kept the fire from extending to nearby homes.

Lakeside Fire would like to acknowledge our automatic-aid partners for their timely assistance in fighting this dangerous fire. Assisting agencies attending this incident included: E4, T4 (Santee); E8 (Heartland Fire-Rescue); Chief 4801 (Barona). Lakeside unit response included : E3, E1, OES305, M2, Div.4105, Div.4104, Chief 4101. San Diego Sheriff's deputies also assisted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Late night structure fire on Olde Hwy 80

Just after midnight on July 30, 2014, crews from the Lakeside, El Cajon, and Santee Fire Departments where dispatched to a reported structure fire on Olde Hwy 80 near Pecan Park.  Heavy smoke could be seen from the top of Lake Jennings Park Road.  Engine 3 from the Lake Jennings fire station was the first engine on scene and reported heavy smoke and fire coming from a detached garage.  The fire was quickly knocked down by first arriving units and there was no spread into the vegetation.  Crews were committed a short time to overhaul the building and check for fire extension through the walls.  The cause of the fire is being looked into.

Units that responded to this where Lakeside engine 2, engine 3, engine 26, Medic 3, chief 4104, and chief 4101.  We also had assistance from El Cajon engine 8 and Santee truck 4. 

Condominium Fire on Mapleview Street Brings Second Alarm

 Lakeside, CA -

On Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 4:07 p. m., the Heartland Communications Center received a 911 call from an occupant that stated there was a wall on fire in their condominium unit in the 12500 block of Mapleview Street.  The first alarm sent four structural engines, one truck company, an ALS medic unit, and a chief officer to the fire.  Enroute units were advised that a number of units were filling with smoke from a possible attic fire.

Medic 2 (River Park Station) arrived on-scene and reported smoke showing from the complex.  Unsure that the occupants had safely exited the unit, firefighters made entry and conducted a search for victims. Engine 1 (Riverview Station) soon arrived and advised the smoke conditions had worsened and fire attack lines were pulled.

Crews soon discovered that a fire was well established in the common wall between two units and had advanced two stories to the attic space. The labor intensive task of opening up the walls and roof began.  Fire was quickly discovered on the second floor and attic.  The incident commander requested a second alarm to augment crews already engaged in chasing down the hidden fire.

With the second alarm came an additional four structural engines, one additional truck company, and an additional  chief officer. 

Truck crews were sent to the roof to conduct ventilation and roof removal operations. Fire was located in the attic area and was knocked down by crews before it could spread to other units. Simultaneously crews were searching adjoining units and conducting salvage operations as smoke and water was entering these occupancies.

Crews begin the task of salvage operations. Smoke and water are removed from the affected units.

Crews were eventually successful in extinguishing the fire after extensive interior operations.  Unfortunately, three units had been affected to the point that they could not be occupied. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the families that had been displaced. 

It was determined that the fire started during plumbing repairs that involved the use of a torch. A total of 16 Lakeside personnel responded to the incident assisted by personnel from the Santee Fire Department and Heartland Fire and Rescue.  Again this demonstrates the seamless working relationship between participants of the automatic aid agreement.

Crews received logistical support from the Lakeside Logistic Volunteers. They provided cold drinks and breathing apparatus support during this operation.

Fire Crews Tackle Vegetation Fire in the San Diego River Bottom

Lakeside, CA-

On Monday, April 21, 2014, at 8:16 p.m. the Heartland Communications Center received multiple 911 calls about a vegetation fire burning in the San Diego River Bottom just east of the Highway 67 bridge. While units were still responding additional emergency calls indicated the fire was in the heavy fuel producing 20 foot flames. In addition to Lakeside Fire units, CalFire initiated a response to assist with the fire.

With the arrival of Engine 2 and Medic 2 (River Park Station), firefighters could see a fire burning in a remote location. Crews evaluated a number of locations to initiate the fire attack but eventually decided to advance an attack line from an area near the Highway 67 bridge. The effort required a hose lay that exceeded 1000 feet, but crews were able to knock down the fire and cut a fire line around the area.

Due to the heavy fuel, firefighters had extensive mop-up.

Currently the fire is under investigation. Crews from Lakeside and CalFire responded to the incident.

Firefighters Jump on "Anderson Hill" Vegetation Fire

Lakeside-

On Wednesday, August 7th, 2013 at 2:37 PM, the Lakeside Fire Protection District received 911 calls about a vegetation fire in the 12300 block of Lakeside Avenue. The fire was established at the base of "Anderson Hill" on the south facing slope. One brush engine, two structural engines, a water tender, ALS medic unit, and two Lakeside staff officers were sent to the fire.

On the arrival of fire units from the nearby River Park Fire Station they discovered a fire burning in light grassy fuels. Crews quickly surrounded the fire and control was established at 2:46 PM. The fire burned less than an acre.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. A total of 8 Lakeside personnel responded to the incident.

Multiple Agencies Respond to a Second Series of Fires on Highway 67

 Lakeside/Santee-

On Sunday, May 26th, 2013 at 6:01 PM, the Heartland Communications Center received multiple 911 calls reporting three separate vegetation fires on State Highway 67 from Winter Gardens Blvd to Woodside Ave. A "medium wildland" response was dispatched which included three structural engines, two brush engines, a water tender, an ALS medic unit, and a duty chief (Tockstein).

Once it was determined that there was multiple fires a request was made for two additional brush engines and a chief officer (Parr).


One fire was located on the southbound side of Highway 67 near Winter Gardens Blvd. Crews took action to keep the fire from entering the San Diego river bottom as this property is adjacent to the Lakeside River Park Conservancy. Another fire was discovered on Highway 67 near the entrance to the Santee Drive-In.

Another smaller fire was contained quickly between these two fires.

Lakeside Fire was assisted by Santee Fire, Heartland Fire-Rescue, and Barona Fire. A total of 10 Lakeside personnel responded to this series of fires.

All three fires are under investigation.

Multiple Agencies Battle Hwy 67 Grass Fires in Lakeside

Lakeside/Santee, CA - 

A series of roadside grass fires spanning well over a one-mile stretch of Highway 67 in Lakeside and Santee brought firefighters from five east county agencies on May 25, 2013. Initial reports to 911 identified six fires between the Highway 52 and Hwy 67 interchange north to Winter Gardens Blvd. Firefighters from multiple agencies approached the area from both the north and south and were able to quickly get a knockdown on these fires.

A coordinated response of chief officers from Lakeside, Santee, and Barona fire departments enabled the large area to be geographically branched-off and firefighting resources to be quickly and effectively directed toward suppression efforts. This incident demonstrates the excellent inter-agency cooperation that we enjoy in the east county.

Fire resources attending this incident included: Brush 1, Engine 2, Brush 26, Medic 2, Division 4105, Division 4106 (Lakeside); Engine 4, Brush 4, Rescue 5, Division 4203 (Santee); Engine 6, Engine 9 (Heartland Fire-Rescue); Engine 19 (San Miguel); Chief 4801, Division 4803 (Barona).

KSON Radio Team Comes to Lakeside for Moore Tornado Relief

Lakeside-

On May 20th, 2013 a devastating EF-5 tornado cut through the central Oklahoma town of Moore. In the aftermath of this disaster two elementary schools had been destroyed, 24 people were killed, 240 people received injuries, and the tornado had cut a 20 mile path of absolute destruction through the community. In comparison this would be a path of destruction one mile wide from Lakeside to Pine Valley...!

At KSON radio, the morning team of John and Tammy knew they needed to act, so a plan was put into action where they would accept donations on behalf of the Red Cross right here in Lakeside. The "Park and Ride" on Mapleview Street quickly became "the place to be" in support of Moore, OK. Lakeside Fire sent Engine 2 and Engine 1 down to see if there was anyway we could help in this outstanding cause.

Brush Fire Off Mapleview Extension Blackens Six Acres

Lakeside-

 On Saturday, May 11th 2013 at 3:30 PM, the Heartland Communications Center received a 911 call about a brush fire off the east end of the Mapleview St extension (east of Pino Drive). Crews clearing a call in the area of Dunbar Lane and Interstate 8 could suddenly see a column of smoke cresting the horizon. A "high wildland" level of dispatch was sent by both Heartland Fire, and CAL FIRE. This level of dispatch brings a combination of brush and structural engines, not to mention, dozers and aircraft.

Medic 2 arrived on-scene an reported about 2 acres with a high rate of spread currently threatening two residential structures in the area. Soon joined by Engine 2 (River Park Station), Engine 4 (Santee Fire), and Engine 9 (Heartland Fire-Rescue) units set-up to protect structures in the area and initiate a hose lay to stop the spread of the fire.

A nearby park ranger reported to the communications center that the fire was spreading into the El Monte Valley from the eastern slope of the hill. Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station), Brush 26 (Blossom Valley Station), Brush 1 (Riverview Station), and CAL FIRE engines positioned themselves on the eastern flank to contain the spread. With the arrival of air assets drops were placed by fixed wing, and helicopters, to slow the spread of the fire till ground forces could contain the fire.

SDSO-CAL FIRE helicopter puts a drop on the eastern side of the fire. Efforts were concentrated in this area to keep the fire out of the El Monte Valley.

The fire was managed by a unified command between Lakeside (Kirkpatrick) and CALFIRE. Lakeside and CALFIRE were assisted by Heartland Fire-Rescue, Santee Fire Department, Barona Fire Department.

A total of six acres were consumed in this fire. The cause is currently under investigation.

Lakeside Firefighters Receive Sheriff's "Distinguished Service Award"

Little did fire crews reporting to work on a September day know they would soon be involved in a shoot out between Sheriff Deputies and a suspect in the 12700 block of Mapleview Street. Deputies from the Santee Sheriff office had developed a lead that possible child abuse was occurring in a local apartment complex. Acting on that information the deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect. Soon shots rang out leaving both deputies injured from gunshot wounds. Deputies returned fire while seeking refuge from the continued gunfire.

A call for assistance was made which brought a response from law enforcement throughout San Diego County. Responding law enforcement officials continued to receive gunfire from the apartment. At the same time the Lakeside Fire Protection District received a call to respond to the incident for the injured officers. An engine company and medic unit responded from the River Park, and Lake Jennings fire stations.

San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore makes the award presentation to Captain-Paramedic John Hisaw, Firefighter-Paramedic Danny Leetch, Firefighter-Paramedic Jamie Hazlewood, and Firefighter Paramedic Eric Stamm. Not present was Fire Engineer Rob Andrews.

Knowing that two deputies had suffered life threatening injuries a plan was put into action that would involve fire crews operating under the cover of law enforcement. Crews entered the complex and quickly located the two officers. They were removed to a safe area where advanced life support could be initiated. But it became obvious that both of these patients needed quick transport to the trauma center where definitive care could be initiated.

The most severely injured deputy was loaded into Medic 3 and quickly transported to Sharp Memorial Trauma Center. During the transport the patient received some of the most advanced trauma care allowed in San Diego County.

Calls for additional medic units brought two ALS units from the Santee Fire Department. The second deputy was loaded into an arriving medic unit and was also transported to Sharp Memorial Trauma Center.



As the crime scene was still unfolding the third medic unit staged in the area in anticipation that others may receive injuries. Later that medic unit would be utilized to transport the injured suspect to a local trauma center.

On May 8th, 2013, the San Diego Sheriff Department awarded the "Distinguished Service Award" to Fire Captain-Paramedic John Hisaw, Fire Engineer Rob Andrews, Firefighter-Paramedic Eric Stamm, Firefighter-Paramedic Jamie Hazlewood, and Firefighter-Paramedic Danny Leetch. The award ceremonies took place at MCAS Miramar in the Bob Hope Theater.

Motor Home Burns on Maine Ave.

Lakeside, CA -

 At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, Lakeside Fire units 4105, E2, and E1 were dispatched to reports of a motor home that was on fire in downtown Lakeside near the corner of Maine Ave. and Laurel St.

When units were leaving station 2 there was a large column of black smoke visible from the area where the fire was reported. 4105 arrived on scene first and reported there was a fully involved small motor home with a utility pole and a fence also becoming involved.

 E2 arrived just behind 4105 and began a rapid attack on the fire with two hose lines. E1 arrived next and assisted the crew from E2 and provided a water source. The occupant of the motor home stated that the engine on the vehicle had stalled and when he pulled off the road he instantly noticed smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment. He quickly vacated the vehicle.

 The fire grew intensely to the point that it ignited a utility pole an a fence that were immediately adjacent to but not touching the vehicle. The fire was stopped by the Lakeside Fire crews before it could spread to any structures. The motor home, as is obvious from the pictures, was completely destroyed by the fire.

Lakeside Firefighters Assist Santee with House Fire

 Just before noon on Monday, September 17, 2012, Lakeside engine 1 and Medic 2 were dispatched to to a residential structure fire in Santee.  Division Chief 4106 from Lakeside Fire District was first on scene reporting a well-involved garage fire.  Santee units arrived on scene and coordinated ventilation and fire attack to quickly knock-down the fire while Lakeside and El Cajon units arrived to assist in stopping the fire from spreading through the attic of the home.  One civilian was assessed for injuries and released at scene.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Units on scene from Santee were engine 4, truck 4, rescue 5, and battalion 2.  Units from Lakeside were engine 1, medic 2, and engine 9 from El Cajon.

Sunday night, a lucky family was able to take a private tour of the new fire station 2 on Lakeside Ave and then sat down to enjoy a dinner prepared by the on-duty firefighters.  The Lakeside Firefighters donated "A Dinner at The Fire House" to the Lakeside River Park Conservancy to be raffled off for charity at a fund raising dinner.  The Peers family was the lucky winner and were able to treat themselves and their immediate family to a dinner headed-up by firefighter/paramedic Jose Corona.  Along with the tour of the station and a closer look at the fire apparatus, the family got to know a few of the first responders in their community.

As the event came to an end, the Station 2 units received a call and everyone got to watch as engine2 and medic 2 headed to a call.

Firefighters Fight Multiple Vegetation Fires in Lakeside

Lakeside, CA -

Just after lunch, firefighters from Lakeside Fire Protection District and surrounding agencies were dispatched to a vegetation fire in the area of Crazy Horse Drive and James Hill Drive in Eucalyptus Hills.  Smoke could be scene from station 1 on Riverview Avenue.  Medic 2  was the first unit on scene and reported several acres on fire and structures threatened.  Battalion 3 and Lakeside Fire Division Chiefs arrived on scene quickly and directed units to the areas that need the most help, ordering multiple strike teams to assist.  Brush 1 was the first brush engine on scene and immediately started a progressive hose lay to extinguish and contain the fire.  With firefighters in place defending homes, crews attacking the flanks of the fire, and firefighting aircraft now making drops, the fire was being brought under control.  As more resources arrived to help the efforts on the ground firefighters were able to get a hose line all the way around the fire.  No homes were damaged and no injuries were reported.

While the first fire was being mopped up, a second fire was reported in El Monte Valley.  Aircraft and resources that were being released from the first fire quickly made their way over to the second fire and where able to keep it to a few acres.  Both fires are under investigation.

Lakeside Firefighters Respond to Vehicle Fire with Extension to Residence

Lakeside, Ca-

Early on the evening on Thursday, May 17, 2012, Lakeside firefighters were dispatched to a reported vehicle fire in front of a residence on Amato Drive in Lakeside. On the arrival of Engine 1 (Riverview fire station), firefighters observed that the vehicle fire had extended into the garage of the residence with an exposure to the second floor above. The Engine 1 Captain (Lowe) immediately requested a full structure assignment consisting of 3 additional engine companies, 1 truck company, 1 medic unit, and division chief.  The Engine 1 crew quickly extinguished the vehicle fire and made access to the garage, limiting further fire spread.  On the arrival of additional fire companies, crews assisted with salvage and overhaul operations checking the rest of the house for fire extension and protecting personal property.  The cause of the fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported.

Lakeside units assigned to this call were Engine 1, Engine 2, Medic 2, and Division 4103.  Other agencies assisting were San Miguel, Heartland Fire Rescue, and CAL Fire.

Lakeside Fire Fighters Battle Well-Involved Residential Fire

Shortly after shift change on Tuesday morning, May 8, 2012,  Lakeside firefighters were dispatched to a well-involved residential structure fire not far from the new River Park fire station on Lakeside Avenue.  Once enroute, Engine 2 reported to Heartland Dispatch and responding units that heavy smoke was visible from their quarters. Lakeside Division 4103 arrived and assumed Incident Command (IC) assigning incoming fire units to necessary tactical assignments . After laying over 700 feet of 4 inch supply line from the closest fire hydrant, Engine 2 was assigned fire attack, assisted by Engine 4 (Santee).  Shortly after making entry into the well involved structure fire, crews had to back out due to heavy fire conditions inside the large single family home.  After Santee Truck 4 arrived on scene and was able to cut some holes in the roof to ventilate much of the heat and smoke, fire crews where able to make entry once again and knock down the fire and extinguish it.

After the Sheriff Bomb-Arson Investigators had finished their investigation, firefighters were able to finish overhauling the structure and removing anything that might cause the fire to reignite.  Once this labor intensive task was complete, crews were able to rehab with water, gatorade, and snacks provided by the Lakeside Logistics Volunteer Group.

Rescue on Ashwood Street

Lakeside-

On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 4:52 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received calls reference a traffic collision in the 10400 block of Ashwood Street. One structural pumper, one rescue company, and an ALS medic unit were dispatched to the scene. Enroute to the incident, additional information was received that one of the cars was overturned and the driver was trapped. The call was upgraded to a "rescue response" which brought a response from 4106 (Division Chief Kirkpatrick).

On the arrival of Engine 2 (Riverpark Fire Station), firefighters discovered a female occupant trapped in her badly damaged sedan. The crew accessed the vehicle and initiated medical care to the sole occupant. On the arrival of Rescue 3 and Medic 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station), the car was stabilized and the process of disentanglement began.

As firefighters started with their initial plan, the patient complained that she was having additional pain with the movement of the car. Crews switched gears and elected to remove the back door and the back of the seat that she occupied. Crews were able to remove the victim with this procedure. New hydraulic rescue cutters, recently purchased with a grant, were used to cut through "new technology metals."

Firefighter-paramedics assessed the victim and determined that her injuries would require evaluation at Sharp Memorial Trauma Center. The patient was transported via Lakeside Medic 3.

The CHP is currently investigating the accident. A total of 9 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident.

Rollover on Hwy 67 in Lakeside

On the morning of February 28, 2012, Lakeside Firefighters were dispatched to a reported rollover with trapped victims on Highway 67 just north of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road at the top of the grade.  While units were enroute, CHP arrived and confirmed that there were two trapped victims.  Lakeside Division Chief 4105 arrived and assumed 67 IC, reporting a pickup truck on its side with two patients inside. Lakeside Engine 2 and Medic 2 ( River Park station) were directed to stabilize the vehicle and assess the condition of the two patients. Engine 1 (Riverview station) and Rescue 3  (Lake Jennings station) arrived shortly after and were able to assist in quickly extricating both injured occupants. Lakeside firefighter-paramedics transported both victims to an area trauma center.

Lakeside Fire units on scene included 4105, Engine 1, Engine 2, Rescue 3, Medic 2, and Medic 3.

Lakeside Firefighters Battle 2nd-Alarm Condo Fire

At 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning, February 26, 2012,  Lakeside Firefighters were dispatched to a multifamily residential fire with multiple reports of smoke and flames.  Upon leaving their nearby quarters, Lakeside Engine 2  reported a column of smoke was visible.  Battalion 8 (Kremensky) was the first unit on scene reporting smoke and flames showing from both floors of an occupied 2-story condominium.  Lakeside Engine 1 (Riverview station) was the first engine on scene followed shortly by Engine 2 (River Park station).  Firefighters quickly stretched handlines and attacked the fire, coordinating interior firefighting operations with outside vertical (roof) ventilation. A rapid response coupled with well-coordinated and aggressive firefighting limited direct fire damage to only the involved unit. Damage to adjacent units was limited to only smoke. One victim was transported by firefighter/paramedics to the local burn center with injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lakeside firefighters were assisted on this challenging fire by our automatic-aid partners from Santee, El Cajon, San Miguel, and Barona. Units attending this incident included: E1, E2, E3, M2, and 4103 (Lakeside); E4, T4, R5 (Santee); E6, T6, B3 (El Cajon); E19 (San Miguel); B8 (Barona).
