Once the again the community of Lakeside opened their hearts and their wallets, and gave generously to the 2014 Kid's News Day held on October 21, 2014. Firefighters and the Logistical Volunteer Group members staffed four locations in the Lakeside, Glenview, and Blossom Valley areas. Most of the locations quickly sold out of their allotment of papers.
The funds generated by the sales goes directly to assist families with sick and injured children at Rady-Children's Hospital. In addition the Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary uses some of the funds for wellness and injury prevention programs.
The Lakeside Fire Fighters would like to thank the community of Lakeside for their continued support of this program. This year's effort generated $3846.90.

Fire Sprinklers Stop Residential Fire in Lakeside
Lakeside, CA -
An accidental fire in an occupied residence was controlled by a residential fire sprinkler in Lakeside on Monday, October 20, 2014. The fire, which started in pump equipment below a large aquarium, was held in check when one nearby sprinkler head, sensing the heat from the flames, began discharging water. Lakeside Engine 3 (Lake Jennings fire station) arrived and reported light smoke from the residence. Firefighters stretched a hoseline and extinguished the remaining hotspots.
This incident is an excellent example of the value of residential fire sprinklers. This fire was quickly stopped in its incipient phase and was not allowed to grow uncontrollably and threaten the lives of the residents of this home. As the banner on our district web site states: "Residential Fire Sprinklers Save Lives."

Facts About Home Fire Sprinklers
- Home fire sprinklers can control and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive on the scene.
- Only the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate, spraying water directly on the fire. In 84% of home fires where the sprinklers operate, just one sprinkler operates.
- If you have a fire in your home, the risk of dying is cut by about one-third when smoke alarms are present (or about half if the smoke alarms are working), while automatic fire sprinkler systems cut the risk of dying by about 80%.
- In a home with sprinklers, the average property loss per fire is cut by about 70%
(compared to fires where sprinklers are not present.)

Lakeside CERT Rises to New Heights

The Lakeside Fire District’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
continues to improve with each passing month. With nearly 80 active members,
this invaluable program adds greatly to the disaster response capabilities of the
community. Citizens trained as CERT volunteers learn and practice skills to
help their families and neighborhoods to not only be better prepared for
emergencies, but also how to organize a response to local and widespread
disasters.

The team recently conducted refresher training and an
exercise at the fire district’s River Park Fire Station and administrative
complex on Lakeside Avenue. Rescue, medical triage, and emergency
communications were practiced with assistance from the district’s other active
community service groups, the Logistics Volunteer (LVG) and Communications Volunteer
(CVG) Groups.

Lakeside Fire Captain Chuck Palmore and Engineer-Paramedic
Lance Buford organized a full day of activities which kept the teams busy.
Multiple scenarios were presented to challenge the CERT members’ skills and
abilities which emphasized teamwork and helped all the participants become
better prepared for the “real thing.”

Lakeside's Cedar Fire Monument Needs Your Help
The ongoing effort to make the Cedar Fire Historical Monument a reality is moving forward. The site chosen for the monument is adjacent to Lakeside's River Park fire station on Lakeside Ave.
The Cedar Fire Historical Monument will be a place that will be forever set aside for our community to remember the devastating wildfire that touched all of our lives. It will be a place for reflection and remembrance of those that tragically lost their lives. It will also be there to provide education and awareness for the next time wildfire threatens our community.
While the project is moving forward, financial help is still needed to make this important historical monument a reality.

Dry Fuels Still a Problem Even in Cooler Weather
Alpine-
On Friday, October 17th, 2014 at 9:50 a.m. the Lakeside Fire Protection District dispatched Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station) to Interstate 8 near Tavern Rd for a series of vegetation fires next to the freeway. In addition resources from Alpine, CalFire and USFS were also dispatched to the incident.
Fortunately on the arrival of emergency resources the fires were found to be relatively small, and were quickly controlled. And while this was not a significant fire, it's a constant reminder that our vegetation is still tinder dry and ready to burn.
While the recent cold front has cooled temperatures it's done little to change the flammability of the fuels found in the surrounding wildland. With recent changes in weather patterns the fire season in San Diego County has become a yearlong event, so remember to keep your guard up...!
In this incident about 1/4 of an acre was burned. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Lakeside Fire Fighters to hit the Streets in Support of Kid's News Day

On Tuesday, October 21, 2014, during the early morning commute time, Lakeside Fire Fighters will be selling the Kid's News Day paper throughout the Lakeside area. This annual event collects much needed funds to assist families and support programs at Rady Children's Hospital. This event is supported by UT San Diego, KNSD NBC-7, and Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary.
So look for us at the following locations:

Lakeside Fire Fighters Team Up with Eastbound Grill to make a Dream Come True

On October 12, 2014, Lakeside Fire Fighters teamed up with the Eastbound Bar and Grill to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Specifically for a young man suffering from a life threatening heart condition. This fund raiser is part of the regional "Octoberstache" effort that Central Zone fire agencies are participating in. But the whole Octoberstache has its unique beginnings right here in the East County.
Six years ago, the El Cajon Professional Firefighters started a friendly competition between their members. The idea was to see who could grow the most impressive mustache. An idea centered around bragging rights soon morphed into a competition with a strong connection to local fundraising. Over the years many groups have received funds from the fundraiser including a number of local charities.
The El Cajon Firefighters felt that this could be a better fundraiser if multiple agencies were approached with the idea of participating in an effort to work together. But this would also provide a better competition to see who could grow the best mustache and have bragging rights over a much broader group of participants.
The concept was that each participating agency would hold a local fundraiser by locating participating merchants that would like to work with the groups. In addition, T-shirt sales would be conducted at these events to provide additional funds.
Lakeside Fire Fighters were contacted by Erwin Sanchez and Gabe Vevloli of the El Cajon Professional Firefighters about participating in this event. Lakeside Firefighter-Paramedic Danny Leetch volunteered to coordinate the local effort.
The Eastbound Bar and Grill was quick to sign onto the effort offering their establishment for a fundraiser. The event was held on the evening of October 12. Eastbound donated 10% of the proceeds to the "Make-A-Wish" foundation.
The Eastbound Bar and Grill has always been an eager participant to help with local charities. The Lakeside Fire Fighters hold an annual "Demolition Derby" event at the Eastbound where the proceeds go to children affected by burn injuries.
As always, there was a great crowd at the Eastbound where everyone enjoyed some exceptional food and surroundings. Once again, Lakeside Fire Fighters would like to thank the Eastbound Bar and Grill for their continued generosity.
A young man by the name of Nathan will be the recipient of this year's fundraiser. Stricken with a life threatening heart condition, Nathan will have the opportunity to fulfill his wish from this effort. Any additional funds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to assist with others.
Now for the good part! If you missed tonight's event you still have the opportunity to attend the big event where the mustaches will be judged and the winner of the Octoberstache will be determined. This is going to be a great finale that you won't want to miss. The event will be held on:
