LMS Opens A New Performing Arts Center

Today marked the long awaited opening of the Lakeside Middle School Performing Arts Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Members of the Lakeside Fire Department were invited to attend the event including Fire Chief Andy Parr, Fire Board Director Susan Conniry, and Engine Company 1.

Lakeside Union School District Board of Trustees President Keith Hildreth cuts the ribbon with Trustees Kevin Howe(retired Lakeside FD), Twila Godley and Gelia Cook assisting.

The school has been undergoing some major improvements that were officially declared open today. The focus of the project, which was started in 2008, is a state-of-the-art performing arts theater. Also included in the upgrades are a new office, new library, lunch area, and parking lots.


LMS Band and Show Choir performed to a full house during the ceremony.

Riverview Fire Station 1 has shared the Lakeside Middle School property and has enjoyed the daily sounds of laughter and happiness from its students for decades.

The students and faculty were very excited and proud to unveil the new look and facilities to parents and the public. With the addition of the brand new performing arts center, Lakeside Middle School can boast to having one of the finest performing arts programs in San Diego County.

Driver Suffers Minor Injuries after Significant Vehicle Accident

On Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 8:15 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received a report that a vehicle had come off of Interstate 8 and had come to rest in the rear parking-lot of a business in the 9400 block of Bond Ave. A structural engine, rescue company, ALS medic unit, and a division chief were dispatched to the incident.

Lakeside Fire personnel assess the driver for injuries, Damage to the vehicle suggest it rolled over at least once.

On the arrival of Rescue 3 and Medic 3, firefighters located a compact sedan that had rolled down the embankment from the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 to a parking area on Bond Ave. Crews made patient contact and discovered the occupant had only minor complaints of pain. Fortunately the occupant was wearing her seat belt which obviously factors into the fact there were no significant injuries.

The vehicle fortunately came to rest in some unoccupied parking spaces.

After assessment, the patient was transported in Medic 3 to Sharp-Grossmont Hospital for further evaluation. Currently CHP is investigating the accident.

A total of 9 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident.

Weather Brings a Rash of Vehicle Accidents

East County-

With the wet weather came a rash of weather related accidents throughout the east county. From the start of the storm, east county fire agencies have responded to 22 vehicle accidents as of late Monday afternoon. In Lakeside, a number of accidents have occurred along the Interstate 8 and Highway 67 corridors. Fortunately the majority of these accidents have been minor or non-injury.

This accident occurred on Interstate 8 in the area of Dunbar Lane. The driver was uninjured in the incident.

Lakeside Firefighters Assist Alpine on Vehicle Over-The-Side

Alpine, CA -

Lakeside and Alpine firefighters teamed-up to assist the victims of a roll-over vehicle accident on Interstate 8 on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The vehicle skidded off the rain-slickened freeway and rolled-over ending up approximately 100 feet down the embankment. Firefighters from Lakeside's Blossom Valley fire station (fs26) were first on scene reporting four patients still inside the vehicle. An additional engine company, rescue company, and chief officer arrived to assist. Eventually, two paramedic ambulances also were called to the scene. A rope rescue system was put in place to assist in hauling all four of the patients up the hillside. All the patients were transported to area hospitals with what appeared to be minor injuries. Units assisting included E26s, R3, 4103 (Lakeside); E17, B7 (Alpine); M17, M492 (AMR). CHP is investigating the accident.

Multi-Vehicle Accident Closes Down Mapleview Street

Lakeside, CA -

On Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at 6:38 p.m., the Lakeside Fire District received calls reference a multiple vehicle accident in the 12900 blk of Mapleview Street. One structural engine, a rescue company, and an ALS medic unit were dispatched to the incident. Enroute crews were advised that multiple cars were involved and the street was possibly blocked.

While initially the damage looks bad, these energy absorbing crumble zones dissipate energy and save lives. It did just what it was designed to do...

On the arrival of Engine 1 and Rescue 3, a total of four vehicles had been involved in the incident. With the potential for multiple victims, a request was made to respond an additional ALS medic unit. Medic 3 was dispatched to the incident.

The paramedics on the engine companies began the task of locating victims and providing initial care. A total of four victims were assessed at the scene. One victim was identified as meeting trauma transport criteria and was immediately transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital via Medic 2. An additional victim with a complaint of pain was transported to Sharp Grossmont Hospital while two elected not to be transported

Currently the incident is being investigated by the CHP. A total of 11 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident.

Logisitics Volunteers Help With Lakeside Reserve Drill

Members of the Lakeside Logistics Volunteers Group (LVG) provided support to Lakeside Firefighters at their monthly reserve drill on Saturday, January 14, 2012. LVG members attended the drill with their incident support vehicle and set up a shaded rehab area, hydration station, and assisted with other needs at the drill. The LVG program allows interested community members to assist the fire district with both special and day-to-day logistical support needs.

Car Accident Takes Down Powerlines

Lakeside, CA -

On January 13, 2012, a vehicle traveling eastbound on Woodside Ave, just west of the Lakeside Middle School was involved in a collision with a power pole. The vehicle ended up with a power pole on its roof and electrical lines down on the street.

The power pole was on top of the vehicle when it came to rest.

When Lakeside Engine 1, from the Riverview Station, arrived with Medic 2, a safety perimeter was established due to the numerous electrical and utility lines on the street. In total there were one power line and 3 utility poles that were broken when the pole was struck by the vehicle. The occupant of the vehicle, who escaped without injury, had jumped out of the vehicle after it had stopped to make sure nobody had been injured with the falling of the lines all around his car.

The nearby school had just let out and most of the children had already dispersed which was very fortunate. There were no injuries involved in this accident. It is important to realize that when an accident involves energized lines it is not safe for the public to approach the vehicle. As can be seen in the photos above, the lines were directly on and around the vehicle. The pole that was damaged in this incident was a terminal pole and the lines to it had been severed which resulted in them having no charge. This was not immediately known when crews arrived on scene. If these lines had remained charged this situation could have had a much worse outcome.

CHP was able to isolate the accident scene and closed Woodside Ave between Marilla Dr. and Riverview Dr. SDG&E line crews are on scene tonight to replace the damaged poles and lines. A full repair is expected within the next few days.

Multi-Jursdictional Response Keeps Fire Outside of Lakeside Area Home

Royal Road Area-

Firefighters from Lakeside, El Cajon, San Miguel and Santee teamed-up to quickly knock down a fire outside a home in the 12000 block of Royal Road in the unincorporated area of El Cajon, an area which is served by the Lakeside Fire Protection District.

Crews knocked down the fire and roped off the area for fire investigators who will attempt to establish a cause for the early evening blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at the time of this post.

Lakeside Firefighters Honor Fallen Nurse

On December 23,2011, Debra Meltzer fell victimin a tragic domestic violence incident that unfolded in a quiet Alpine subdivision.What was not widely publicized is that Debra was an emergency roomnurse, at Sharp Memorial Hospital, who had dedicated her life to helping others. In this role, Debrainteracted with Lakeside paramedics on a regular basis. The loss of thisdedicated professional was felt throughout the east countyas personnel from many local agencies knew Debra.

Recently at her memorial, the crew of E26s (Blossom Valley)was asked to fly a flag provided by The World Memorial Organization, at her memorialservices. Lakeside Fire Engineer John Eastlick and Lakeside Engineer Scott Smith secured theflag to the aerial boom on the apparatus so that it could fly over this verysolemn event.

Multiple Agencies Assist with a Commercial Fire in Lakeside

Lakeside, CA -

On Monday, December 26, 2011, at 8:20 p.m., the Heartland Communications Center received a report of smoke rising from the roof of a commercial structure in the 12500 block of Lakeshore Dr. Five structural engines, one truck company, one ALS medic unit, and Division 4106 (Kirkpatrick) were dispatched to the alarm. Enroute to the fire, additional calls were received now stating there were "flames" on the roof of the building.

Upon the arrival of Engine 1 and Medic 1, firefighters observed a commercial occupancy charged with smoke and light smoke showing from the roof of the building. Crews pulled attack lines and made entry into the occupancy to discover a commercial clothing dryer had ignited, possibly spreading fire to the roof.

On the arrival of Engine 2, a supply line was laid from a hydrant on Lakeshore Dr. to the fire scene. Truck 4 was requested to ladder the roof and check for fire extension. In addition, smoke had entered a second occupancy which required crews to ventilate the area before additional damage could occur. The crew from E4 setup additional smoke fans to deal with the issue.

Crews discovered that the fire was isolated to the dryer unit. After partial dismantling of the unit crews were able to fully extinguish the fire.

A total of 12 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the fire, assisted by crews from Santee and CalFire.

Lakeside Firefighters Assist El Cajon with Vehicle Rescue

El Cajon, CA -

Firefighters from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) assisted units from El Cajon Fire on a rescue vehicle accident early on the morning of December 24, 2011. The crew from Engine 3 arrived just after 4:30 a.m. for a vehicle that left westbound Interstate 8 near Greenfield Dr. ending up in a concrete drainage ditch. Subsequent responding units were directed to access the scene through Circle RV Park on East Main Street. One vehicle occupant was extricated by firefighters. Despite the high-speed and obvious vehicle damage, both occupants appeared to have minor injuries. Other units attending this incident included B3, E8, M8, and T6. CHP is investigating the crash.

Lakeside Firefighters Help Local Families During the Holidays

Lakeside Firefighters were able to make the holidays a little happier for two local families this holiday season. As they have for the past several years, Lakeside Fire District employees, including operational and administrative personnel, and fire board members, were able to provide a little help for a couple of families that had some needs at this time of the year. On-duty and off-duty firefighters and some of their kids were joined by Lakeside Fire Board members Susan Conniry and Jon Lorenz (and Jon's son) to deliver gifts and food in time for the Christmas holiday.

This annual event, known as adopt-a-family, is coordinated by Lakeside Firefighters' Association members Engineer-Paramedic Chris Downing and Firefighter-Paramedic Jose Corona. Lakeside Firefighters would like to thank everyone involved for their donations of time and money and wishes everyone a happy and safe holiday season.

Lakeside Structure Fire Sends Three to UCSD Burn Center

Glenview-

On Friday, December 23, 2011, at 4:36 a.m., the Heartland Communications Center received an urgent phone call from the occupants of a structure fire stating that their travel trailer was on fire and they were unable to exit the dwelling. Dispatchers stayed on the line prompting the occupants to "get out." In response to the call, five engine companies, one truck company, one ALS medic unit, and two division chiefs were sent to the fire in the 13400 block of Highway 8 Business.

On the arrival of Engine 3 and Medic 3, firefighters discovered SDSO deputies moving the occupants away from the fire building in fear that stored oxygen cylinders may explode. Two victims were suffering from severe smoke inhalation and were in need of immediate medical intervention. A third victim showed mild signs of smoke inhalation.

A request for an additional medic unit was made which brought a response from Lakeside Medic 1. After receiving initial advanced life support at the scene all three victims were transported to UCSD for further evaluation.

On investigation it was discovered that the occupants had lit a candle in response to the power failure. At some point the fire spread causing moderate damage to a back bathroom.

A total of 12 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident. Lakeside was assisted by units from El Cajon, Santee, San Miguel, CalFire, and Barona Fire. Units sent to the incident:

Vehicle Accident Results in Widespread Power Outage

Lakeview-

On Friday, December 23, 2011, at 12:48 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received calls reference a vehicle accident in the vicinity of Lakeview Rd and East Lakeview Rd. Reporting parties reported a loud crash with a power outage in the area. One structural engine, one rescue company, and an ALS Medic unit responded to the incident.

On the arrival of Rescue 3, firefighters discovered a vehicle that had completely knocked down one power pole, causing major damage to two adjoining poles. Power lines lay strewn across the roadway and front yards of homes in the affected area.Crews also discovered the involved vehicle was unoccupied.

CHP and Lakeside Fire units closed traffic on Lakeview Rd, West Lakview Rd, and East Lakeview Rd. It's likely this traffic control will remain in effect until repairs are completed.

SDG&E has no estimate on repairs. CHP is currently investigating the incident.

Lakeside Fire Dedicates New Station

Lakeside Fire Protection District dedicated the "River Park Fire Station" on Friday, December 16, 2011, during a ceremony to honor all of those who were involved in the process of making this station a reality. The new station is designed to be a headquarters station, replacing both an outdated fire station and a separate administration office making it possible to bring them under a single roof. This state of the art fire facility was designed to serve the citizens of Lakeside and our regional partners for many years to come.

The ceremony began with opening remarks from Lakeside Fire Chief Parr as the flag was lowered at the current Station 2 and brought to the new station to be raised. As is tradition in the fire service, the crew from station 2 raised the flag to the sounds of the Star-Spangled Banner being played to the El Capitan High School Marching Band.

Once the flag was raised, the ceremony proceeded with representatives of Congressman Duncan Hunter and State Senator Joel Anderson recognizing the Lakeside Fire Protection District board members for their work in making sure this fire station was built to serve the citizens of Lakeside. Board President Nick Johnson was on hand to represent the board during these proceedings.

The Fire District took time to honor longtime Lakeside Fire Board member R.A. Smith, who passed away earlier this year. Director Smith's Family was on hand to receive a plaque as the Board room of the new facility was dedicated and named in his memory.

The final speaker was Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who was instrumental in ensuring this facility was built in Lakeside. During her time at the podium Supervisor Jacob praised the Lakeside Fire Protection District for being on the forefront of the growing movement to address fire protection on more of a regional basis. With this facility, Lakeside has built a facility that will last long into the future and is well-suited to address whatever changes come to the fire service for years to come.

Lakeside Fire Protection District would like to thank the citizens of Lakeside for their patience as we built this station. We are aware that the burden of having a construction project of this size was at times trying. The added traffic and dust will prove to be worth it as this station comes on line. It is for the citizens of Lakeside that this station was built and we look forward to being able to better service our community from this station. The fire station, which has been covered on this blog many times, is nearing completion and looks to be fully operational within a month. Lakeside Firefighters Assist in Harbison Canyon

Harbison Canyon, CA -

Firefighters from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station were called to assist Alpine Fire with a vehicle versus tree in Harbison Canyon late on December 10, 2011. The small car had apparently left the roadway at a high speed and struck an oak tree high up an embankment. In addition to the need for stabilization, two occupants were trapped in the vehicle and required extrication. Firefighters from Rescue 3 and Medic 3 (Lakeside) worked with the Engine 17 crew (Alpine) to stabilize the vehicle and then used hydraulic rescue tools to "pop" a rear door. Both occupants were awake and talking to crews with what appeared to be minor injuries. The CHP is investigating the accident.

The stabilization struts known as "Rescue 42's" were purchased as part of a federal grant for rescue equipment.

Lakeside Firefighters Donate $2000 to the Lakeside Longhorns Cheer Squad

The Lakeside Longhorn Midget Cheer Team has been making aname for themselves. After competing locally, the girls found their way to theRegional Finals in Long Beach. In Long Beach, the girls went up against teamsfrom Hawaii, Arizona, and the Southern California area. Once again the teamplaced first, which meant they were headed to Orlando, Florida for the NationalFinals.

The Lakeside Firefighters were treated to a goodbye cheer.... Good Luck Girls!

But moving an entire cheer team across the country is notcheap. Looking at costs of about $24,000, the team started an aggressive scheduleof fundraising in the community. With the support of the community and localbusinesses, the girls came to the Lakeside Firefighters with a very impressiveamount already in their war chest.

On the morning of Saturday, December 3, 2011, theentire squad showed up at a recent Lakeside Firefighters Association meeting tomake a presentation. From that meeting the Lakeside Firefighters were glad tocontribute $2000 to the effort. This is a very impressive group of young peopleand we wish them the best of luck next week in Florida!

Brownie Troop 6675 Visits Fire Station 3

The firefighters at Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) got a special visit from some great kids on Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Brownie Troop 6675 came by for a station tour and visit. The on-duty crew showed the girls (and their moms) our quarters, offices, dayroom, and kitchen. They were also given a tour of all the apparatus housed at fire station 3. We also had a brief talk about home fire safety and demonstrated a smoke detector for the girls. The brownies were working on their first aid badges and this tour helped them toward attaining that goal.

Head-on Collision on Highway 67 Brings Multiple Rescue Response

Lakeside: Just after 1:00 p.m. on November 17, 2011,Lakeside Firefighters were dispatched to a reported head-on collision on Highway 67 just north of Vigilante Road.On arrival of Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills fire station), it was discovered that each vehiclehad a trapped victim in critical condition. An early request for assistancebrought multiple agencies together for a coordinated extrication effort.

Major damage to bothvehicles required a lengthy extrication effort.
Numerous tools and advancedrescue techniques were used to complete the rescues.

Arriving firefighters were assigned to each vehicle in order to providepatient care and conduct rescue operations. Lakeside Battalion 1 (Chief Laff) providedincident command and directed the efforts of several agencies includingLakeside, Santee, and San Miguel Fire Departments as well as Mercy Air whoprovided aeromedical transport for one of the victims. Both extrications tookapproximately 30 minutes and required the use of tools from two rescue units. Atotal of 24 fire personnel were involved in the incident. CHP is currentlyinvestigating.

Incidents such as these demonstrate the value of interagencycooperation and joint training. The Lakeside Fire Protection District isthankful for the assistance provided by our neighboring agencies and is proudto provide similar help when needed.

Lakeside Firefighters Attend "Heroes" Breakfast at Lakeside Farms School

The C-division firefighters at Lakeside's Riverview fire station (fs1) were treated this morning to a "Heroes Breakfast" at Lakeside Farms Elementary School. This annual event is hosted to honor those people that the students regard as "heroes." In addition to the firefighters,several active duty and veteran personnel from the military also attended. The heroes were thanked for their service as the students passed through the auditorium to view walls decorated to celebrate the heroes and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Thanks again to the PTA, staff, and students of Lakeside Farms.

Lakeside Firefighters Extinguish Small Vegetation Fire

Lake Jennings -

A small vegetation fire brought a wildland resource response from Lakeside firefighters on Thursday, November 10, 2011. Firefighters from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) made quick work of the small fire on Lake Jennings Park Road not far from Engine 3's quarters. Despite the recent rains, the vegetation remains very dry and still poses a fire danger. Resources on scene included: E3, M3, B1 (Lakeside); E3382 (CalFire).

High-Speed Head-On Collision Brings Full Rescue Response on I-8

Alpine, CA -

An apparent wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle on eastbound Interstate 8 just east of the Peutz Valley bridge this afternoon just before 1:30 p.m. Firefighters from Lakeside's Blossom Valley (fs26) and Lake Jennings (fs3) fire stations responded to the scene. Alpine Battalion 7 (Paskle) assumed I-8 Incident Command and requested additional resources including an aeromedical transport helicopter.

Firefighters were faced with one critically injured patient and two additional patients with moderate injuries. Due to the major vehicle damage, fire control measures were also put in place. The CHP eventually closed-down eastbound I-8 to allow the Mercy Air 6 helicopter to land. The critically injured patient was loaded and transported by MA6 while the other two were ground transported by Medic 17 (AMR) to an area trauma center. The CHP is investigating the accident.

Fire resources assigned to this incident included: E26s, R3, M3, B1 (Lakeside); E19 (San Miguel); B7 (Alpine). Also assisting were SDSO, CHP, AMR, and Local Tow Company.

Lakeside Units Assist Barona Fire with a Fully Involved Structure

Barona-

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at 2:10 a.m., the Heartland Communications Center received calls reference a fully engulfed residential structure on fire in the 1100 blk of Ak Uunyaa Wy on the Barona Reservation. Initially dispatched was five structural engines, one rescue company, one water tender, an ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief.

Fire extends throughout the home under construction.

On the arrival of Engine 27 (Barona), firefighters discovered a 4000+ square foot, residential structure (under construction) fully involved in fire. A request was made for brush engines as embers from the fire had the potential to ignite the nearby vegetation. CalFire dispatched two brush engines to assist.

On the arrival of Engine 1 (Riverview Station), they were tasked with assisting with knock down on the fire, and obtaining a water source. The problem was that the nearest hydrant was about a quarter of a mile from the fire. With the arrival of Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station) and Engine 4 (Santee-Cottonwood), crews laid out an extensive hose lay to the hydrant. With a secure water source, Engine 27 was now able to use master streams (a hose stream in excess of 500 gallons per minute) to take the heat out of the fire.

Firefighter-Paramedic Jon Jordan, and Reserve Firefighter Corey Palmore use a heavy stream to knock down the fire.

Crews then extended handlines to continue with the extinguishing of the fire. Crews were pulled back due to the complete loss of structural integrity.

Currently the San Diego Sheriff Bomb-Arson team is investigating the fire.

Lakeside units dispatched to fire: Engine 1, Engine 2 (diverted to medical aid call), Engine 3, Battalion 1.

A total of 10 Lakeside Fire personnel initially responded to the fire.

National Test of the Emergency Alert System is November 9th at 11:00am

At 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, the nation’semergency services workers will be testing the National Emergency AlertSystem. This national system has beenput in place to distribute information to citizens through a trickle-downsystem of local emergency centers which are in place nationwide. Commercial broadcasters, as part of their licenseto broadcast to a service area, agree to cooperate with state and localauthorities in the use of this system.

San Diego County residents are familiar with frequent testsof our local Emergency Alert System (EAS) as well as the (thankfully)occasional advisories, usually for severe weather and other emergencyinformation distribution.

In this first ever test on a nationwide scale, the nationalsystem will activate state relay centers that will, in turn, activate localemergency centers (San Diego County) sending the emergency signal to local broadcastersand cable providers.

The test should last about 1 minute.

So, on November 9, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. (PST), stand by for atest. This is a test of the emergency activation system. This is only a test.

Rescue 3 Assists the Rural Fire District in Harbison Canyon

Harbison Canyon-

On Monday, November 7, 2011, at 2:25 a.m., a request was made by the Rural Fire District to have Lakeside Rescue 3 respond an assist on a structure fire in the 600 blk of Silverbrook Dr in the community of Harbison Canyon.

Hoselines run up the driveway of the involved structure. The majority of the dwelling was saved.

On the arrival of Rescue 3, fire units were engaged in locating a fire that had originated in the fire place but now was running through walls and the attic space of a house. Rescue 3's crew was assigned to the roof of the structure to remove the enclosure around the chimney and any roofing involved in the fire.

Once the enclosure had been breached, the crew located active fire running up the wall and into the attic space. Between the hoselines in the interior and those on the roof, crews were able to knockdown the fire.

In addition to crews from the Rural Fire District, there were personnel from CalFire, Sycuan Fire, and Lakeside Fire on scene.

A total of 3 personnel responded from Lakeside Fire.

One Critical in Highway 67 Collision

Moreno Valley-

On Sunday, November 6, 2011, at 9:37 p.m., the Heartland Communications Center received multiple calls about a major collision that had occurred in the 11900 blk of Highway 67. Calls indicated that a head-on collision had occurred and one of the vehicles was engulfed in flames. Another calling party indicated an occupant was trapped in a vehicle near the fire. A full rescue response was dispatched that included two structural pumpers, a rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief (Darby).

Heavy damage is evident to both vehicles.

On the arrival of Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills), they discovered one vehicle on fire with a critically injured occupant lying in the roadway. The crew pulled an attack line to knock down the fire and initiated patient care on the victim.

With the arrival of Battalion 1, Engine 1, and Medic 1, crews identified a total of three patients. An additional ALS medic unit was requested which brought a response from Medic 3 (Lake Jennings Station). It was determined that no victims were trapped so the crew from Rescue 3 (Lake Jennings Station) was assigned to triage and patient care.

All three patients were transported to the trauma center at Sharp Memorial Hospital. The accident is currently being investigated by CHP. A total of 14 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident.

Highway 67 was shut-down for an extended period of time while crews resolved the incident.

Traffic Accident Causes Traffic Snarl on Lake Jennings Park Rd

Lake Jennings Area-

On Sunday, November 6, 2011, at 5:08 p.m., the Lakeside Fire District responded to the intersection of Harritt Rd and Lake Jennings Park Rd for a reported vehicle accident. On arrival, crews conducted assessments on the four occupants in the two involved vehicles. Fortunately nobody was seriously injured and only one occupant required transport to the hospital.

Lakeside paramedics work on the injured occupant who was later transported to Alvarado Hospital.

It was soon recognized the heavy traffic from people returning home from their weekend activities was backing-up into the Lakeside area on Lake Jennings. Crews assisted CHP with traffic control to keep Lake Jennings Park Rd open to travel. After tows arrived for the involved vehicles traffic was returned to normal conditions.

Currently the incident is under investigation by the CHP. A total of 9 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident.

It is that time again. Last night, we all got an extra hour of sleep as we changed our clocks back one hour to standard time. It is also time to replace those batteries in your smoke alarms.

Lakeside Fire District wants to remind everyone that a properly functioning smoke alarm is your best chance to escape a residential fire. Smoke alarms should be placed in hallways outside of sleeping areas, in every bedroom, and on every level of your home. Also, remember to test your smoke alarms every month!

A Great Day at Lakeside Station #3

Lake Jennings Area-

On October 13, 2011, the crew from Lakeside Fire Station #3 received a report that a teacher at Lakeview Elementary School had lapsed into unconsciousness. In a series of fortunate events, a teacher from another classroom had discovered Vickee Cloniger at her desk unresponsive. A call was placed for help and the school nurse responded to the classroom.

Discovering that Vickee was now pulseless, CPR was started until the arrival of the fire department engine company and paramedic ambulance. Upon entering the scene, the crew discovered that the patient continued to be pulseless. Advanced cardiac life support was initiated which included a series of defibrillations to re-start the heart. Soon paramedics detected a pulse and the monitor indicated that Vickee's heart had started beating again.

Medications were administered to keep the heart functioning normally and the crew rapidly loaded her into Medic 3 for the short ride to Grossmont Hospital. En route to the hospital the crew was amazed as the patient not only started breathing on her own, but had regained consciousness and was holding a conversation with the medics.

Over the weeks of recovery, the crew was able to follow Vickee's recovery through reports from the hospital. But the best reward occurred on November 4, 2011, when Vickee, and her husband visited the crew at the fire station.

Fully recovered, Vickee has returned to the job she loves; as a 1st grade teacher at Lakeview Elementary.

Vehicle Rescue on Scripps Poway Parkway

Highway 67 Corridor-

On Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at 11:50 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received a report of a vehicle that had left the roadway on Scripps Poway Parkway just west of Highway 67. A full rescue response was sent which included two structural engines, one rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief (Laff). Enroute, based on location, Battalion 1 requested a response from the Poway Fire Department.

Rescue 3 uses their light tower to help crews working over the side.

On the arrival of Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills), they discovered a badly damaged vehicle off of the roadway in steep terrain. The crew made contact with a sole occupant that had multiple traumatic injuries. During the assessment it was discovered that the patient may have been sitting there for several hours before her discovery.

If you look carefully you can see the side mounted winch used to stabilize the vehicle on the slope. Rescue 3 has the capability to mount the winch on all four sides of the apparatus.

On the arrival of Engine 1 and Medic 1 (Riverview Station), they were assigned to patient care. It was determined that the driver-side door would require removal to extricate the occupant. With the arrival of Rescue 3 (Lake Jennings Station), the car was stabilized on the hillside with a winch and hydraulic tools were used to provide access to the patient.

The vehicle came to rest on the edge of a steep canyon.

The patient was transported to Sharp Memorial Trauma Center in Kearny Mesa for further care. The accident is being investigated by CHP. A total of 13 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident assisted by 3 personnel from the Poway Fire Department.

Lakeside Fire Welcomes Cub Scout Troop 387

The crew from Lakeside Fire Station #3 got to spend the evening with Cub Scout Troop 387 (Lakeside). This is great opportunities to deliver a safety message covering topics from fire safety to the use of the 911 system. As always, the Scouts had some really great questions about the daily job of the firefighters. During their visit they got to see the equipment on Engine and Rescue 3, look over the specialized medical gear on Medic 3, and tour the fire station.

Way to Go Lakeside....!

On the morning of October 25, 2011, Lakeside Firefighters hit the streets selling the Kid's NewsDay newspaper in support of patients and families at the Rady Children's Hospital. Crews went to three different locations in Lakeside, Glenview, and the Lake Jennings area. This year's event was coordinated by Fire Engineer Chris Downing

Lakeside Firefighters Rich Smith, Josh Raczka, and Chris Williams at the intersection of Los Coches Rd and Highway 8 Business.

The crews were given until 9:30 a.m. to sell their allotment of newspapers but given the fantastic response by the community, most crews were out of papers by 8:30am.

In many cases, people only wanted to contribute to the cause and refused the paper (to be sold later). Others contributed more than the $1 price of the paper. In the end, Lakeside Firefighters delivered $3249 to benefit Rady Children's Hospital!

After the Fire: Do You Know Who You're Dealing With?

The Lakeside Fire Protection District has NO notification process for these services, nor do we maintain a relationship with any company for purposes of "fire restoration."

Trash Truck Fire Creates a Big Mess for Lakeside Firefighters

Foster - On October 20, 2011, Lakeside firefighters responded to the area of Highway 67 and Vigilante Road for a reported "Large Vehicle Fire." Lakeside Battalion 1 (Barnes) arrived and discovered a full-sized semi tractor trailer rig with smoke showing from the cargo area. The driver was found in a safe location and confirmed the load as regular household waste (trash). On the arrival of Lakeside Engines 2 and 3, firefighters laddered the trailer and confirmed a deep-seated fire in the trash load.

Past experience with these types of fires dictated that the load be dumped out and the fire accessed from the ground. A representative from nearby Daily Disposal offered-up his yard for the load to be dumped in. Once on the ground, the trash fire was quickly extinguished.

Thanks to Daily Disposal for the use of their yard, bobcat and water tender. It was a great help in taking care of this fire.

Lakeside Firefighters Respond to Truck Accident on Wildcat Canyon Road

Wildcat Canyon -On the morning of October 19, 2011, Heartland Fire Communications dispatched Lakeside and Barona firefighters for a reported large delivery truck that had rolled-over on Wildcat Canyon road near Stelzer Park. Lakeside Battalion 1 (Tockstein) was first on-scene assuming "Wildcat IC" and reporting a 2-ton delivery truck that had left the roadway on the west-side of Wildcat Canyon Road and had rolled onto its side. The vehicle sustained major damage and a heavy tow truck was requested. Firefighters arriving on scene encountered the driver who had self-extricated from the wreckage. Lakeside firefighter/paramedics treated the single patient and transported him to Sharp Memorial trauma center in San Diego.

It was subsequently discovered that the truck's fuel tank was leaking diesel fuel. A HazMat response was requested and San Diego County HazMat, San Diego County Roads, and a private cleanup firm eventually responded. It took nearly three-hours to mitigate this incident with the truck finally being pulled-off the embankment by the tow company. Traffic on Wildcat Canyon Road was backed up for miles due to the need for a lane closure.

This incident is a great example of how the fire service uses the Incident Command System to manage numerous numbers and types of resources from several different agencies in order to successfully mitigate a complex incident.

Responding resources included: E1, R3, M1, B1 (Lakeside); E27, B8 (Barona); San Diego County HazMat and Roads; Private tow and cleanup companies; CHP.

Lakeside, Ca. -This October, you may notice that the Lakeside firefighter's uniform t-shirt looks a little different. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lakeside Firefighters have gone "Passionately Pink for the Cure."This nationwide fundraising effort is coordinated between affiliates of the International Association of Fire Fighters and Susan G. Komen for the Cure ®. A portion of the price for each shirt sold to firefighters is donated to this important cause. Lakeside firefighters will be wearing the shirts on-duty throughout the month of October.

Multi-Agency Response Holds Vegetation Fire to Half Acre

Glenview-

On Thursday, October 13th, 2011 at 7:50am, the Heartland Communications Center started to receive multiple calls about a vegetation fire in the area of Highway 8 Business and Aurora Drive. The initial response included engines from Lakeside, El Cajon, and CalFire.

Firefighters from Lakeside and CalFire stop forward fire spread on Division Zulu.

On the arrival of Battalion 1 (Laff) a "large spot" of heavy vegetation was burning up slope through an open field that lies between the interstate and Highway 8 Business. Additional brush engines and aerial support was requested. This sent additional equipment from Lakeside, San Miguel Fire Districts, and Copter 10 and 12.

Initially progress was slow due to steep terrain, but crews later used ladders to access the fire area. Although weather conditions were ideal for a fire, the lack of winds kept the fire spread to a minimum. Eventually crews were able to stop forward progress at a half acre. Crews were then tasked with cutting a fire control line around the perimeter.

Witnesses were able to identify a suspect in connection with the fire. Sheriff deputies arrested the suspect near the scene.

What are Divisions?

Divisions are geographical segments of a vegetation fire. Breaking the fire down into these smaller segments makes managing the fire more effective as the Incident Commander only needs to communicate with a limited number of managers. As the fire grows in size additional Divisions can be assigned.

Typically when an initial commander pulls up to the fire the left flank is known as Alpha, while the right flank is called Zulu....

Lakeside Firefighters Visit

Firefighters from Station 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station) paid a visit to Rios Elementary School today to speak to the children about fire safety. The students from Mrs. Hanna, Mrs Olenick, Mrs Mckimmie and Mrs Otte's classes paid close attention as Firefighter Shawn McKenna talked to them about how to stay safe.

Stop! Drop! and Roll!

Many fire departments regularly participate in public education events for children like this one especially during the month of October which has "Fire Prevention Week". Today the youngsters learned important lessons about smoke detectors, home evacuation, 911, stop-drop-and-roll, what to do with matches and identifying firefighters as friends even when they look scary dressed in full protective equipment.

Eng. Downing is not so scary when you know he's your friend.

All eyes were wide with enthusiasm while they looked at fire Engine 3, Medic 3 and all of the equipment carried on each unit. Not only do our firefighters love to visit schools because we like to show off our equipment, we also acknowledge the importance of early exposure to fire safety education.

Lakeside Fire Sends Units to Battle "Great Fire"

Julian-

The Lakeside Fire District has sent three engine companies to the "Great Fire" currently burning in the back country east of the town of Julian.

On October 1st: Lakeside sent Brush 2 (Eucalyptus Hills Station) and Brush 26 (Blossom Valley Station) to the fire as part of a strike team (6440C) from the Central Zone (Heartland). These units initially found themselves in Chariot Canyon with the task of holding the fire east of Julian. This strike team is still currently assigned to the fire.

October 2nd Update: The "Great Fire" was active all night, growing from an estimated 900 acres, to over 1500 acres. At 5am this morning Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Fire Station) was dispatched to the Julian area for structural protection as part of strike team 6441A. Currently Engine 3 is holding structural protection on the eastern edge of Julian. The strike team is being led by Lakeside Battalion Chief Ron Laff.

October 3rd Update: Both strike teams remain committed to the Great Fire as of this morning. Engine 3 (S/T 6441A) spent the majority of yesterday providing structural protection in the desert near Scissors Crossing. They will continue to provide structural protection today.

Brush 2 and Brush 26 are still assigned to the incident as part of strike team 6440C. After putting in a large hose lay (in extreme terrain) on the first day of the fire, crews will continue with containment efforts.

As of this evening both strike teams have been released and are returning to Heartland.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at 2:43 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received calls reference a motorcyclist down in the intersection of Los Coches Rd and Ora Belle Ln. Both Engine 3 and Medic 3 were dispatched from the Lake Jennings Fire Station.

Upon arrival, the paramedics initiated rapid trauma treatment and packaging for a single patient with moderate injuries. The rider states he was traveling at 50 mph when he lost control of the bike. Evidence at the scene indicated that he may have also struck a light pole as the bike skidded to a stop.

The patient was transported to the Sharp Memorial Trauma Center for further evaluation of his injuries. The CHP is currently investigating the accident.

Automatic Aid Response Holds Harbison Canyon Fire to 5 Acres

On Monday, September 19, 2011 at 12:27 p.m., Lakeside firefighters were dispatched to the T.H. Bar Ranch Trail (Harbison Canyon Area) as part of a multi-agency response to a vegetation fire. The initial dispatch included units from Lakeside Fire, CalFire, Alpine Fire, San Miguel Fire, El Cajon Fire, San Diego County Fire Authority, and Sycuan Fire.

CalFire and Lakeside Firefighters start the hose lay on Division Alpha. This hose lay would prevent the fire from extending down the canyon.

On the arrival of Battalion 7 (Paskle-Alpine Fire, he reported a quarter-acre fire threatening structures and moving up slope. First arriving units were placed on the threatened structures while CalFire and Lakeside units started an extended hose lay in the steep terrain.

With the arrival of the aircraft, drops were made to cut off the fire's advance toward the structures in the area. The CalFire S-2 airtankers made precision drops in the deep canyon while County Copters 10 and 12 worked the flanks keeping the fire in check while ground crews slowly advanced through the thick ground cover.

With persistent effort, the crews were eventually able to surround the fire and stop its forward progress. Unfortunately a firefighter suffered an injury when a large rock rolled off the steep hillside striking him as he worked.

A total of 7 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident. Crews were released around 4:20 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation by CalFire.

Lakeside Firefighters Assist in Paraglider Rescue

El Monte -

Lakeside firefighters were called to the El Monte Valley on the afternoon of Sunday, September 18, 2011, after several citizens at El Monte County Park witnessed a paraglider make a crash landing on the face of El Cajon Mountain. While enroute the area, Lakeside Battalion 1 (Lawler) requested aerial assistance from the San Diego County Sheriff's helicopter program. Responding fire crews staged at El Monte Park and, with the assistance of several citizens, were able to visualize the injured paraglider pilot high-up on the face of the mountain. County Copter 10 responded from Gillespie Field in El Cajon and quickly made contact with the victim who had suffered traumatic injuries. The Copter 10 crew performed a hoist rescue and delivered the patient to waiting firefighter/paramedics at the park. The injured pilot was transported to Sharp Memorial Trauma Center in San Diego.

Vegetation Fire Extends into Structure

On Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 8:51 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received calls reference a vegetation fire in the 13200 blk of Aurora Dr. Callers reported that the fire had extended into a patio area and was threatening structures.

On the arrival of Battalion 1 (Laff), he discovered a small brush fire that had extended into the deck area of an adjoining structure. Fortunately local residents armed with garden hoses were able to keep the fire from extending further into the structure. Upon the arrival of Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station), a hoseline was pulled and the area was overhauled.

A point to remember: Even though this is a small area, it doesn't take much to suffer structural damage when clearance (green zone) is inadequate

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Approximately $1000 of structural damage occurred.

Kitchen Fire Brings Multi-Agency Response to Lakeside

An early afternoon kitchen fire brought firefighters from several agencies to Lakeside on September 16, 2011. Heartland Fire Communications received a 911 call from a resident of the home in the 13200 block of Aurora Drive at 2:40 p.m. Heartland dispatchers promptly alerted the closest fire stations. Firefighters from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) were first on scene reporting light smoke from a single family home. As firefighters were stretching a hoseline to attack the fire, the smoke became much heavier and fire was observed burning in the kitchen. The attack line was advanced into the smoky structure and the fire was quickly knocked down.

Units assigned to this incident included: E1, E3, M3, B1 (Lakeside); E8, T6 (El Cajon); E19 (San Miguel).

This call demonstrates the excellent teamwork that occurs between the 911 dispatchers and the fire crews that they assign to emergency responses. On this incident, the first-in fire engine (Engine 3) was on the scene and taking action to stop a dangerous and rapidly growing fire in just over seven minutes from the time the 911 call was answered at Heartland Fire Communications.

Lakeside Firefighters Extinguish Brake Fire

Firefighters from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) attended a brake fire on a semi-tractor trailer rig on westbound I-8 near Los Coches road on Saturday, September 10, 2011. The crew from Engine 3 could smell the hot brakes as they left quarters enroute the fire scene. Several passers-by were attempting to extinguish the fire with dry chemical fire extinguishers as Engine 3 arrived on scene. While firefighters were setting-up to attack the fire, one of the tires blew which always makes these calls more interesting. The fire was quickly extinguished with a preconnected hoseline. Engine 3's firefighters used their thermal imaging camera to identify remaining hot areas and spent several minutes making sure the brakes and tires were cooled-off before picking-up. Lakeside firefighters respond to several of these types of fires every year, especially on the section of Interstate 8 that traverses our fire district.

Early Morning Crash Closes Southbound Highway 67

On Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at 5:28 a.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received 911 calls reference a vehicle accident on Highway 67 north of Vigilante Rd. Two structural engines, one rescue company, two ALS medic units and a battalion chief were dispatched to the incident.

On the arrival of Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills Station), they discovered an accident that included multiple vehicles with significant damage. One vehicle had flipped onto its roof while another had been catapulted onto the barrier wall. The crew started identifying injured occupants and assessing the need for extrication. On the arrival of Battalion 1 (Tockstein), command was established and additional equipment was requested.

Fire units were forced to park in the northbound lanes as southbound could not be accessed.

Rescue 3 (Lake Jennings Station) and Engine 4 (Cottonwood-SanteeFD) arrived and assisted in the treatment of two patients that had moderate injuries. A third patient was identified but her injuries did not appear life threatening. Medic 4 (Santee Fire) and Medic 9 (El Cajon Fire) transported patients to the trauma center at Sharp Memorial. An AMR ambulance transported a third patient to Pomerado Hospital.

The accident resulted in an extended shutdown of the southbound lanes of Highway 67 while tow crews worked to clear lanes.

A total of 7 Lakeside personnel responded to the incident, assisted by 5 personnel fro the Santee Fire Department, and 2 from the El Cajon Fire Department.

The accident is currently being investigated by CHP.

Wildcat Accident Sends Two to the Trauma Center

Wildcat Canyon-

On Labor Day, September 5, 2011, at 10:50 a.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received calls of an auto accident with a trapped victim in the 12800 block of Wildcat Canyon Rd. A joint response from the Lakeside and Barona fire agencies consisted of two structural engines, a truck company, a rescue company, two ALS medic units, and two battalion chiefs.

With the arrival of Battalion 8 (Kremensky-Barona), two moderate/acute trauma victims were located. One of the victims appeared to be trapped in the full size pick-up truck. The crew from Truck 27 (Barona) was able to open a door and make access to the injured occupant and initiate care.

One victim showed signs of significant shock and was immediately transported by Medic 1 (Riverview fire station) to the trauma center at Sharp Memorial. With the arrival of Medic 3 (Lake Jennings fire station) the second victim was transported to the same facility.

The accident is currently being investigated by CHP. A total of 14 Lakeside personnel responded to the alarm, assisted by 4 personnel from the Barona Fire District.

Cyclist Injured in Remote Section of Lake Jennings

Lake Jennings Park-

On Sunday, September 4th, 2011 at 11:54AM, the Lakeside Fire District received a 911 call for the park rangers at Lake Jennings reference a cyclist that had taken a 15 foot fall in a remote section of the lake. A rescue company and ALS medic unit were dispatched to the scene.

The crew of Medic 3 load the injured cyclist into the ambulance.

The ranger staff at the lake led Medic 3 and Rescue 3 to an area east of the campground on a hiking trail. Crews assessed a patient with shoulder pain after a fall from a mountain bike. Crews were able to extricate the patient to the medic unit.

The patient was transported to a local hospital via Lakeside Medic 3.

Lakeside Firefighters Climb to Honor 9-11 Responders

A team of Lakeside firefighters were among several hundred firefighters, police officers, and civilians who participated in The San Diego 9-11 Memorial Stairclimb on September 3, 2011, at the Bayfront Hilton hotel. The event, which was hosted by the San Diego Fireman's Relief Association, is one of many held nationwide to honor both the responders and civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Each participant committed to climb a total of 110 stories (the height of the twin towers in Manhattan) in honor of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD, and 37 Port Authority police officers who gave their lives in the line-of-duty that day.

The pre-climb ceremony included a presentation of colors by the Chula Vista Fire Department Color Guard and traditional music by the San Diego Firefighters Emerald Society pipes and drums.

The event was also a fundraiser for the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation and San Diego-based charity FirefighterAid.

Lakeside firefighters consider it an honor to participate in such an important event and we ask that, as the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks approaches, everyone take some time to reflect on the events of that day and the sacrifices that were made. Above all, let's NEVER FORGET!

Vehicle Crashes onto El Capitan Ball Field

Lakeside-

On Friday, September 2nd, 2011 at 3:07 a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received a call that a vehicle had left Ashwood Street and was now resting on the El Capitan High School baseball field. One structural engine, a rescue company, ALS medic unit, and battalion chief (Tockstein) were dispatched to the incident.

On the arrival of Battalion 1, he discovered a vehicle sitting in the middle of right field with an occupant still in the car. Engine 2 accessed the area and made contact with a sole occupant who had minor complaints of pain. The occupant was evaluated by the paramedics assigned to Medic 3 and transported to Grossmont Hospital for further evaluation.

Fire personnel from Engine 2 and Medic 3 evaluate the only occupant in the vehicle.

Ironically, the car breached the fence at the same location of a previous incident, thus there was little new damage to the facility.

CHP is currently investigating the accident. A total of 9 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the early morning incident.

Engine 3 Handles Vehicle Fire

Camino Canada -

A vehicle fire in the parking lot of the Denny's restaurant brought the C-division crew from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) on the morning of September 1, 2011. Despite bystander attempts to extinguish the fire with several dry chemical extinguishers, the engine compartment was well-involved with fire on the arrival of Engine 3. Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and knocked-down the fire with a preconnected hoseline and water from Engine 3's booster tank.

Upon investigation, it appeared that the engine compartment had several nests of grass and dry leaves (probably rat or mice nests). The hot engine parts ignited the vegetation, sparking the fire.

Multiple Fires Along I-8 Brings Multi-Agency Response

Alpine, CA -

Multiple small brush fires along Interstate Highway 8 brought a multi-agency response on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Four separate fires were reported between Dunbar Lane and Tavern Road just after 2:30 p.m. Alpine Battalion 7 (Rushing) requested a high-wildland resource dispatch and along with Alpine 4701 (Paskle), coordinated the placement of incoming fire units to handle the four simultaneous fires. Additional chief officers from Lakeside, CalFire, and U.S. Forest Service responded to assist Tavern Incident Command with the direction of the numerous fire units assigned to the fires.

While the fires were relatively small in size, the smoke blowing across both east and westbound lanes created a real hazard for drivers on I-8. Heartland Fire Communications dispatched Central Zone firefighters from Lakeside (B1, Br2, Br26, E3), Viejas (E25, Br225), Alpine (E17), San Miguel (E19), and El Cajon (E8). Additional resources responded from CalFire, U.S. Forest Service, BLM, and San Diego County Fire Authority. Two water-dropping helicopters were also assigned to the fires.

The rapid response and quick coordination of the assigned resources kept these fires from becoming a potentially much larger blaze.

Lakeside Firefighters Help Battle Barona Blaze

Barona- Just after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29 ,2011, Lakeside firefighters were called to assist several other agencies with a vegetation fire that was burning on the Barona Indian Reservation in the 15000 block of Wildcat Canyon Rd near the intersection with San Vicente Rd.

The fire was initially reported as fast moving 20 acre blaze in light to medium fuels that was making a run up a west facing slope with a slight upslope wind on it. The combination of the light fuels, slope, and ambient temperatures above 100 degrees were ideal conditions for the fire to make a rapid spread.

Heartland dispatched a high wildland at 3:10 pm , which included Units from Barona , Lakeside, and Santee Fire Departments. It was determined that the fire was moving toward the San Diego Country Estates so additionally a Type I strike team was requested for structure protection. Every station in Lakeside sent units to the fire, including Engine 1, Brush 2, Engine 3, Brush 26 and Battalion 1. Lakeside Fire stations were then supplemented with move up companies from San Miguel and La Mesa Fire.

The fire grew rapidly but as resources arrived on scene it began to be controlled. The combined use of hose lines up the flanks of the fire and a heavy aerial attack with both fixed and rotary wing aircraft brought the fire to a halt at approximately 60 acres. The threat to the San Diego Country Estates neighborhood never materialized as the fire was stopped before it could reach any structures. The cause of this fire is under investigation.

We have seen a steady increase of fire activity from fire we had just down the street on August 7, 2011 and again the other fire we saw again just down the street on August 20, 2011. As we continue to see an increase in fire intensity over the summer as the fuel loads become more susceptible to fire spread. This is a reminder that all people who own property in an urban interface area should continue to be vigilant about maintaining their defensible space.

Vehicle Fire on Lemoncrest

Lakeside: On August 26, 2011, Lakeside firefighters were dispatched to the report of a vehicle fire on Lemoncrest Dr. Engine 1 (Riverview fire station) arrived and found a pickup truck on fire on the dirt hill just above Lemoncrest Elementary School.

A hoseline is stretched and SCBA is donned.

Fire attack is initiated.

The vehicle was on its way to becoming fully involved with smoke and flames coming from the engine compartment. An attack line was stretched and fire extinguished. As can be seen in the photos, firefighters don the same protective clothing as is used for structure fires.

The fire is knocked-down and the area is cooled off.

Car fires, while not in an enclosed environment, produce a great deal of harmful gases that can be inhaled if breathing apparatus (SCBA) is not worn.

The engine compartment is accessed and overhauled.

The vehicle's driver stated that he was backing out of the driveway when one of his tires went off the road and the truck slid down the hill where it became stuck and eventually caught fire. The prompt action of the Engine 1 crew kept the fire from spreading to the surrounding vegetation which could have done a great deal of damage in this residential area.

Truck Driver Narrowly Escapes Serious Injury

On Friday, August 26, 2011, at 2:48 p.m., Lakeside firefighters responded to a report of a large truck accident on Driftwood Creek Rd. near Quail Canyon Rd. in Blossom Valley. Engine 26s (Blossom Valley fire station), Rescue 3 and Medic 3 (Lake Jennings fire station) arrived on scene to find a Waste Management refuse truck in its side fifty-feet down an embankment.

Fortunately the driver was able to jump free of the vehicle after losing control before it plummeted down the hillside. He sustained only minor injuries.

After attending to the injured driver, Lakeside firefighters stood by with safety hoselines for the vehicle recovery operation. Two heavy-duty tow trucks from RoadOne towing were required to pull the massive wreck back up to the roadway through the dry vegetation.

This effort required consultation with the supervisor

As you can imagine, it was no simple task to recover the refuse truck. The effort took close to three hours with temperatures hovering just below 100 degrees.

Suspicious Package Results In A Hazmat Response

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at 3:31pm, Lakeside firefighters from Blossom Valley station 26 were dispatched to investigate a report of a suspicious package containing unknown chemicals. Upon arrival at the Chocolate Summit Drive residence, the homeowner stated that an unexpected package was found at their front gate. The small cardboard box was marked with hazardous warning markings and lacked any shipping information to indicate its origin, intended destination, or exact contents.

Multi-Agency Hazmat Response

Sensing that something was not right, the homeowner left the package in place and called 911. After a cautious visualization by fire personnel, the package markings and incident situation was reported to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health Hazardous Incident Response Team (DEH-HIRT) for consultation. The scene was secured and a safe perimeter was established. Due to the circumstance and limited available information, it was decided that a full Hazmat response was indicated. This response included units from San Diego County and City Hazmat teams along with the San Diego Sheriff Bomb Squad.

A plan was developed with input from all agencies involved. Initially, Sheriff Bomb Squad personnel were sent in with portable x-ray equipment to determine if any evidence of an explosive device was present. The x-ray was then analyzed and no explosive device indicators were detected. San Diego City Hazmat-1 personnel were then sent in wearing level-B exposure suits to open the package and inspect its contents.

Hazmat personnel discovered a two-part industrial adhesive inside which was properly packaged in accordance with hazardous materials transport regulations and deemed not to be a hazard. The box and contents, which included indications as to its origin, were removed from the scene by County Hazmat and an investigation into its intended destination will be conducted.

In this incident, the package turned out to be safe and harmless in its proper containers. However, the homeowner acted absolutely appropriately when faced with the unknown nature of the situation. Remember, if something doesn't seem right to you, treat it with caution and be on the safe side.

Quick Response in Lakeside Stops Vehicle/Vegetation Fire

On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at 2:30 p.m., Lakeside firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Hwy 67 near Slaughterhouse Canyon Road. Initial reports from Heartland Communications indicated there might be two occupants still inside the burning vehicle. While enroute, dispatchers reported a possible threat to nearby vegetation. With this new information, Lakeside Battalion 1 (Tockstein) requested a full wildland fire resource response.

Lakeside E2 (Eucalyptus Hills fire station) was first on scene reporting a fully-involved vehicle fire extending into the nearby vegetation. Firefighters quickly deployed two hoselines and extinguished the brush and vehicle fire. Luckily, the report of occupants in the vehicle were unfounded.

The quick response and aggressive actions of E2's firefighters kept this relatively small fire from becoming a
major wildland fire.

This fully-involved vehicle ignited the nearby brush.

Lakeside Fire Crews Respond to Brush Fire on Bull Pen Rd.

Barona- Just before 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 ,2011, Lakeside firefighters were called to assist several other agencies with a vegetation fire that was burning in the 1100 block of Bull Pen Road on the Barona Indian Reservation. The fire was seen, ironically enough, by Barona Fire crews who were out training with their Brush unit. A medium wildland dispatch, which was quickly upgraded to a high wildland dispatch included Battalion 8, Brush 27, Rescue 27 (Barona), Engine 1, and Engine 2, Brush 26 (Lakeside); Engine, Brush and Medic 27 (Barona); Brush 4 (Santee).

The fire was located on a west facing slope and had a slight onshore wind behind it, pushing it up toward the top of the ridge line. This area last burned in the Witch fire in October of 2007. The vegetation, unlike how it looks in the Google Earth view, has recovered a great deal and had a mix of annual grasses, shoulder high poison oak, and dense brush.

The fire carried well through the grass crops but did not burn well in the more dense fuels. In what is a carbon copy of the fire behavior of the fire we had just up the street on August 7, 2011 the dense fuels slowed the fire enough that it was able to be halted before it burned unchecked into the national forest.

Barona units quickly began progressive hose lays up the flanks of the fire, which were quickly supplemented by crews from the municipal departments, USFS and Cal Fire as they arrived on scene. The fire crews were aided by aerial resources as they progressed up the fire, which was moving up the hillside toward the east, being driven by topography and light upslope winds. The fire was quickly handled by the resources on hand and held to less than 10 acres. In addition to the engine companies and aerial operations, Cal Fire hand crews were brought in to aid with the suppression operations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This fire again illustrates that the vegetation is drying out as the summer progresses. We continue to see an increase in fire intensity over the summer as the fuel loads become more susceptible to fire spread. This is a reminder that all people who own property in an urban interface area should continue to be vigilant about maintaining their defensible space. In what is another example of how well the various agencies in San Diego County work with one another, especially in these urban interface areas. It is due to the ongoing efforts by all agencies to train together and follow the same tactics and strategies during emergency operations that we can have crews from 7 different agencies all working together seamlessly completing an objective. The training earlier in the year such as the San Diego County Wildland Drill, and the annual RT 130 Wildland Refresher Course are continuing to pay their usual dividends in our inter-agency operations as we progress through the summer wildland season.

Lakeside Firefighters respond to House Fire

Winter Gardens - On Tuesday August 16, 2011 Lakeside Fire crews were dispatched along with crews from San Miguel, El Cajon, and Santee to the report of a structure fire on Vista Del Cajon in the Winter Gardens area. The initial dispatch reported that there was heavy black smoke coming from under the residence. When San Miguel Engine 19 arrived on scene their report on conditions confirmed there was smoke rolling out from under the building. Lakeside Engine 1 and Medic 1, from the Riverview station, were next on scene and laid a 4 supply line up to E19, who was actively engaging the fire.

El Cajon Engine 8 was close behind E1 and moved up to assist E19 with fire attack. Soon after the arrival of the first three units came Lakeside Battalion 1, El Cajon Engine 9, Santee Truck 4 and Cal Fire unit 3352. Crews on scene had to remove all of the skirting around the residence to attack the fire that was burning under the structure.

After several minutes of removing siding and spraying water on the flames the fire was suppressed. The fire was held to the underside of the structure and kept from extending into the residence. Nobody was injured in the fire and the cause is under investigation.

Eucalyptus Hills Chipping Day

Eucalyptus Hills, CA -

On Saturday, August 13, 2011, the Eucalyptus Hills Fire Safe Council held another successful community chipping day. The event allows local residents to drop off brush and other vegetation that would otherwise add fuel to a potential wildfire.

A record total of 117 loads of brush, branches, and cuttings were chipped into mulch that homeowners could then use as ground cover. This event was funded through donations collected at previous chipping day events and supported by the Eucalyptus Hills Landowners Association.

Barona Vegetation Fire Draws Interagency Response

Barona- Just after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8,2011, Lakeside firefighters were called to assist several other agencies with a vegetation fire that was burning at approximately the 8 mile marker of Wildcat Canyon Road on the Barona Indian Reservation. There had been an initial dispatch for Cal Fire and Forest service units for a fire on Wildcat Canyon, and shortly after Barona Units were called to investigate smoke at the north end of the reservation.

The fire was quickly determined to be on the Barona Reservation so a medium wildland dispatch was put out for Heartland units to respond. On the dispatch were Battalion 1, Brush 2, Engine 1, and Engine 3 (Lakeside); Battalion 8, Engine, Brush and Medic 27 (Barona); Brush 4 (Santee).

As initial units were arriving on scene, the fire was only 1-2 acres but it was traveling at a moderate rate of spread across the light flashy fuels (light grass and annual growth shrubs) and heading towards the thicker vegetation that covered the rock-strewn mountainside. Fire crews and aerial resources began attacking the flanks of the fire, which was moving along the hillside toward the west, being driven by topography and slight upslope winds. The fire also had a slight backing motion to it, spreading slowly to the east, where it would meet Wildcat Canyon Road. Crews, including the Lakeside and Santee units, began arriving on scene and supplementing the hose lays that had been started by Barona Fire, Forest Service, and Cal Fire Units.

The Fire was quickly handled by the resources on hand and held to approximately 10 acres. In addition to the engine companies and aerial operations, both handcrews and a dozer were brought in to aid with the suppression operations. This fire shows that the vegetation is drying out as the summer progresses. We have steadily seen fire intensity increase over the summer as the fuel loads become more susceptible to fire spread. This is a reminder that all people who own property in an urban interface area should continue to be vigilant about maintaining their defensible space.

Hiking Related Rescues on the Rise

Over the last year there has been a steady increase in the number of rescue calls to extricate stranded hikers in the San Diego County area. This number is simply reflective of the increased use of trails throughout the region. Hiking has had a resurgence in popularity, thus many hikers find themselves unable to return to their vehicles due to a variety of reasons.

But really the biggest concern is the timely notification of emergency services when things go wrong. One of the most challenging aspects of rescuing hikers is finding them in the back country.

To better enjoy the network of trails in San Diego County we suggest:

Don't hike alone. Many people can become incapacitated, and unable to seek help on their own. Hike with a group, or a friend.
Let people know where you are going. Don't keep your trip a secret. Let family and friends know where your trail head is at, where you are hiking to, and when you are due back.
Know your wilderness address. Access to you GPS coordinates can be invaluable to rescue crews. The price has dropped considerably on basic GPS units, but for those of you with smart phone technology, many have navigation apps that will provide you with this information. Consider downloading one before your next hike.
Hike with a cell phone. I know, many of our trails are well outside of reliable cell phone coverage. But many are within the coverage area. Even if you are initially out of cell phone range, it's likely to be faster to hike to an area with "bars", as opposed to hiking to the car and driving for help.
Water, water, water...! One of the biggest reasons emergency services are called out is for dehydrated hikers that under estimated their water needs. On a normal day a hiker can sweat away a liter of fluid for every two hours of hiking. As the temperature climbs, or the terrain gets rough, those water needs will only go up.
Match your hike to your current level of conditioning. Many people underestimate the physical demands of some of the local trails. Take the time to research the local trails and their difficulty level.
Stay put...! Once you have called for help and given a specific location...stay put. Often crews have difficulty when they arrive at a specific location only to find the victim gone.

Hiking is a great recreational sport that should be enjoyed by all. Just go prepared...

Vehicle Vs. Tree in Eucalyptus Hills

Eucalyptus Hills-

On Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 6:35a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received calls that a vehicle had left the roadway and impacted a tree in the 11400 block of Valle Vista Rd. A structural engine, rescue company, and ALS paramedic unit were dispatched to the incident.

On the arrival of Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills fire station), firefighters discovered a severely damaged vehicle with a single occupant who had sustained moderate injuries. Crews also discovered that a fire had ignited in the engine compartment area. Firefighters removed the occupant and initiated medical treatment while other crew members extinguished the fire.

The patient was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital Trauma Unit in Kearny Mesa by Lakeside firefighter/paramedics. The incident resulted in the closure of Valle Vista Road while CHP investigated the accident and tow crews removed the car.

Lakeside Units Assist Alpine with an Early Morning Structure Fire

Alpine, CA -

On Saturday, July 16, 2011, at 1:45a.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District sent two engine companies to the Alpine area to assist that Alpine firefighters with a residential structure fire in the 1200 block of Willowside Terrace. Arriving Viejas and Alpine Fire units found a residential structure fire with one bedroom engulfed in flames.

On the arrival of E26s (Blossom Valley fire station) and E3 (Lake Jennings fire station), they were assigned interior attack assignments to complete knockdown on the fire. Crews then completed overhaul of the fire area.

Explosion Rattles Lake Jennings Neighborhood

Lake Jennings Area-

On Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at 4:53p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received calls about a loud explosion and smoke in the area of the Levi Water Treatment Plant in the 9500 block of Lake Jennings Park Rd. Concurrently, the communications center at the Sheriff's Department lit up with multiple calls reference an explosion in the area. Engine Company 3, and Battalion 1 (Tockstein), responded from the Lake Jennings fire station, with a number of deputies.

Firefighters responded to the treatment plant and met with Helix Water District personnel. During an on-site inspection of the facility, it was discovered that a mechanical unit, used in the process of water purification, had suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure resulting in a significant explosion.

Firefighters checked for any type of hazardous materials release or other hazards that may have resulted in an additional explosion. Helix personnel quickly resolved the situation and no hazardous materials were involved in the incident.

A total of 4 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the call, assisted by the San Diego Sheriff's Department.

Lakeside Fire Units Respond to Structure Fire in Santee

Santee, CA -

Lakeside Fire crews were dispatched at 2:07 p.m. on July 12, 2011, to a structure fire on the border of Santee and Lakeside on Fonteyn Ct. Engine 1 (Riverview Station) and Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills Station) were on the initial dispatch along with Battalion 2, Engine, Rescue,and M5 from Santee, and Truck 11 from La Mesa.

Engine 1 was the initial unit on scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the structure with residents attempting to suppress the fire with garden hoses. E1 was able to lay a 4 inch supply line and start an initial attack on the fire with the help of E5 who had also arrived on scene. E2 was assigned to the roof to perform vertical ventilation to help exhaust the heat, smoke, and fire gases from the structure.

The fire was found to be only in the garage and it was kept from extending into the primary structure with a combination of the aggressive fire attack and timely ventilation. The fire burned deeply into the rafters which compromised the integrity of the roof so crews had to improvise a way to remove the roof tile and check for fire extension.

The 24 foot extension ladder, as seen in the photo above, provided a platform for crews to begin removing the roof tiles with pike poles and rubbish hooks (tools of the trade). Not enough of the structure could be accessed from the ladder so the decision was made to use the aerial ladder from Truck 11 to continue the work.

The fire was extinguished with units from the first alarm. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the San Diego Sheriff's Department Arson Unit.

Lakeside Crews Help Extinguish Small Brush Fire

Old Barona Road -

Lakeside firefighters were called to assist Barona Fire units with a vegetation fire on July 12, 2011, that was burning on Old Barona Rd. Barona Brush 27 arrived on scene just behind Barona Battalion 8 and began a mobile pumping operation along the road which they later turned into a progressive hose lay along the right flank of the fire.

Engine 1 (Riverview Station) and Engine 3 (Lake Jennings Station) quickly arrived on scene and started a hose lay on the left flank of the fire assisted by crews from Cal Fire engines 3382 and 3352. Due to the rapid response and adequate number of resources (firefighters) assigned, this fire was quickly contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This fire was small but it shows that, as the summer progresses, the vegetation is starting to dry-out and is burning more readily. Residents in Lakeside and surrounding areas need to ensure they have their minimum 100-foot clearance around their homes and other structures. This clearance combined with practicing a high degree of fire safety when using anything that could lead to a vegetation fire will help combat fires this summer.

Lakeside Personnel Train On The New Heartland Roof Ventilation Prop

As part of standard tactics during battle with fire inside astructure, firefighters are called upon regularly to cut holes in the roof toallow smoke and super-heated gases to escape. As fire progresses in an enclosed building so do thebyproducts of combustion including, smoke, heat and toxic gases. With nowhereto escape, these super-heated gases quickly combine to create a deadlyatmosphere with little to no visibility. Firefighters refer this environment asImmediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH). With modern protective clothingand breathing apparatus, firefighters are able to enter IDLH atmospheres butthese conditions seriously hamper rescue and fire suppression efforts. Oneanswer to this problem is the coordinated and systematic removal of the smoke,heat and gases through roof ventilation.

On Saturday July 9, 2011, a total of ten LakesideFire personnel took advantage of a new roof ventilation prop at the Thomas H.Owen Training Facility. This recently completed addition to the Heartland facility,located at 1301 N. Marshall Avenue in El Cajon,is designed to allow firefighters the opportunity to practice ventilationtechniques on simulated roof structures.

The two pitched roofs and one largeflat roof use the same construction methods and materials as typicalresidential and commercial buildings in our area. Built right on ground level,the roofs provide for a safer training environment as well as easier access forreassembling following each training evolution.

The on-duty crew from Lakeside's Blossom Valley fire station ( Engine 26s) led thetraining exercise including seven Lakeside Reserve Firefighters through theproper execution of various roof ventilation techniques. The new prop made itpossible for all personnel to get plenty of important hands-on practice withventilation tools including the chain saw and fire axe.

Captain J. Charles Weber Retires from Lakeside Fire Protection District

Lakeside Fire has recently had a retirement of one of its longest-tenured employees, Captain Chuck Weber. After serving the Department for almost 40 years, Captain Weber decided it was time move on. Starting as a seasonal firefighter with Lakeside and working his way ultimately to the position of Deputy Fire Marshal, Chuck filled many roles while he was with the Department.

Lakeside Units Handle a Rollover Traffic Collision on Wild Cat Canyon

Lakeside, CA -

On July 1, 2011, just after 11:00 p.m., Lakeside firefighters responded to a report of a rollover traffic collision on Wildcat Canyon Road. The response included engines and a rescue unit from Lakeside and Barona as well as two paramedic ambulances from Lakeside and Santee. On the arrival of Lakeside B1, he reported the vehicle was on its side with one occupant trapped in the vehicle. Two other occupants from the vehicle had self-extricated and were on the side of the road.

E1 (Riverview Station) was quickly on scene and began patient care with the assistance of E2 (Eucalyptus Hills Station) . R3 (Lake Jennings Station) arrived and began stabilizing the vehicle and working on removing the trapped patient. Barona E27 arrived from the north end of Wildcat Canyon and assisted with patient extrication. Due to the prolonged extrication, B1 requested Mercy Air 6 from Gillespie Field in El Cajon to expedite transport once the trapped patient was freed from the car.

All three patients were transported to an area trauma center. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the CHP.

Vehicle Rescue on Highway 67 at Mapleview Street

Lakeside-

On Tuesday, June 28,2011, at 11:09 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received reports of a traffic collision on southbound Highway 67, just south of Mapleview Street. A rescue response was sent that included a structural pumper, rescue company, an ALS medic unit, and battalion chief (Lawler).

Lakeside Fire personnel begin the extrication on the vehicle.

On the arrival of Engine 1 (Riverview Station), they reported a single occupant trapped in a vehicle that had sustained a major impact to the rear of the vehicle. The victim was assessed by the paramedic on the engine company and it was determined that his injuries were actually mild given the impact to the small subcompact.

While not visible from the front, this vehicle took a significant impact.

On the arrival of Rescue 3 and Medic 3 (Lake Jennings Station), the extrication and removal of the patient was completed. The patient was transported by Medic 3 to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa for further evaluation of his injuries.

A total of 9 Lakeside Fire personnel responded to the incident. Currently CHP is investigating this accident.

Alert Neighbors Save the Day

Johnstown-

On Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at 10:20 a.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District dispatched an engine company and ALS medic unit to 9500 Harritt Rd to assist the Sheriff Department on a welfare check.

Alert neighbors became concerned when they had not seen their neighbor in a couple of days. A call was placed to the manager who responded to the dwelling. Concern escalated when her car was discovered at the home. Attempts to alert the occupant were to no avail. A 911 call was placed for assistance.

On the arrival of the Sheriff Deputy, access could not be made due to security doors so a call was placed to the fire department for assistance.

Arriving companies elected to make immediate access based on the information. A door was forced open and crews made access. Upon entering the dwelling a female occupant was discovered on the floor of the living room. The patient thinks she fell the prior day and had been on the floor for an entire day.

Crews initiated advanced life support and transported the patient to Sharp Trauma in Kearny Mesa.

Without the actions of her concerned neighbors this could have had a very different outcome. With daytime temperatures reaching into the 80's it would not have taken long for dehydration to set in.

Vehicle Vs. Commercial Structure

On Sunday, June 26, 2011, at 10:42 a.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received a call that a vehicle had impacted the McDonalds restaurant located in the 13500 block of Camino Canada. Initial reports indicated that the vehicle had entered into the "playland" area. A commercial response was sent that included three structural engines, a truck company, a rescue company, and ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief (Laff).

On the arrival of Battalion One, it was observed that an SUV had entered the structure. Engine 8 (El Cajon Fire) conducted an initial assessment of the interior and discovered only the driver required medical evaluation. Engine 1 and Medic 1 (Riverview Station) were assigned to render care and evaluate the stability of the structure.

A building inspector from the County of San Diego was requested to evaluate the structure. CHP is currently conducting the investigation.

A total 9 personnel from Lakeside responded to the incident, assisted by personnel from the Santee, El Cajon, and Barona Fire Agencies.

Lakeside's Danny Leetch takes First Place at Demolition Derby

San Diego County Fair-

In 2010, Danny Leetch got the bug to try his luck in the demolition derby arena. The Firefighter Demolition Derby was the perfect venue as the proceeds from this effort would go to burn survivors. With the financial backing of the Lakeside Firefighters Association, Danny would locate and purchase a 1973 Cadillac Coupe Deville. After extensive repairs and modifications the vehicle was ready to participate in the 2010 event. But this was not going to have a happy ending. As the vehicles rolled out to the arena, the vehicle suffered a mechanical break-down that would prevent it's participation.

Undaunted by this event Danny continued to maintain the vehicle for an entire year. After months of final preparation work the only thing Danny needed was funds for the entry fee. One day, Danny had the idea to drag the vehicle up to a local shopping center in Lakeside and see if he could generate some interest.

Not only did the crowds show up, but they were very supportive of Danny's effort. With almost $900 collected Danny needed some sponsors to assist with additional costs. Paytons Hardware (Lakeside), Black Mountain Bikes (Mira Mesa), and Famulare Jewelers (Carlsbad) stepped up and sponsored Danny for the approaching event.

All Danny needed now was a pit crew to assist him on the day of the event. In stepped Danny's family and a number of off-duty firefighters.

The first heat was a well-fought battle and having placed second, Danny would now move on to the finals. But a problem existed. The rear of the Cadillac had been damaged so badly that the pit crew was unable to remove a flat rear tire. In addition, the radiator had blown in the first heat and nobody knew how long the giant V8 would hold out.

The radiator on the 2-20 gives out in the first heat.

Crews attempted to bend the metal away from the tire with pry bars....but no luck. Fortunately the pit crew located additional pry bars and an axe that was used to cut away the fender.

With less than a minute to spare, Danny was back in the seat and headed out for the final event.

The Lakeside 2-20 goes after the 34 car from National City.

With a mortally wounded radiator, Danny's strategy was basic.....go out and do as much damage before the engine blew-up. And Danny did just that! Using both the front and back of the vehicle, Danny was making headway. At one point the 2-20 just quit running....but after some TLC the old girl re-fired.

In the end, Danny had taken the trophy for first place. The 2-20 had hung on by a thread. With two gallons of gas left in the tank, a bent rear axle, bent steering, and an engine so hot it had managed to melt away most of the plastic parts, the 2-20 had done its job.

Head-On Collision on Wildcat Canyon Rd sends Three to Trauma Center

Wildcat Canyon-

On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at 2:13.a.m., the Lakeside Fire District received calls about a traffic collision on Wildcat Canyon Rd. Initially thought to be in the Barona area, a joint response was initiated that included units from Lakeside and Barona Fire. This response included three structural engines, one ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief. Subsequent calls later placed the accident closer to Willow Rd. Based on that location, an ALS medic unit was requested to respond from the Riverview Fire Station.

Severe damage to both vehicles.

On the arrival of Engine 2 (Eucalyptus Hills Station) and Battalion 1 (Tockstein), they discovered a moderate velocity head-on collision with a total of three traumatized occupants. After identifying all of the potential patients a request was made for an additional ALS medic unit. This brought a response from Medic 3 out of the Lake Jennings Station.

Crews treated the victims for moderate injuries and packaged them for transport to various locations. Two victims were taken to Mercy Trauma Center (Hillcrest) via Medic 1. An additional patient was transported by Medic 3 to Sharp Trauma (Kearny Mesa).

A total of 11 Lakeside personnel were sent to this incident. CHP is currently investigating the accident. The accident closed Wildcat Canyon Rd for over an hour.

Battalion Chief Ron Laff sent to Wallow Fire

Eastern Arizona-

On June 15, 2011, Lakeside Battalion Chief Ron Laff was sent to the 400,000+ acre Wallow Fire burning on the Arizona - New Mexico border. Chief Laff was sent there as part of a Type 2 IMT (Incident Management Team) from California.

Ron will be in charge of a "division" (geographical segment of the fire) once the team assumes their duties. Typically personnel can be assigned to a fire for 14 days.

6/16: Chief Laff is currently in Springerville, AZ about to join the IMT.

6/18: Chief Laff is currently on the fire running division G and H on day shift.

Firefighter Demolition Derby this Saturday

Del Mar, California -

This Saturday, June 18th at 5:00PM, Danny Leetch will pit his driving skills against other firefighters in the annual Firefighter Demolition Derby at the San Diego County Fair. Danny will represent the Lakeside Firefighters as he attempts to battle it out to victory.

The proceeds from this event go to the Burn Institute to help pay for the support services they provide to burn survivors. This last Saturday Danny took the car to the local Vons (on Camino Canada) and received almost $500 dollars in community donations. This money will be used to assist the Burn Institute in their efforts....

Paraglider Crash Brings Multi-Agency Response

Blossom Valley-

On Monday, June 13, 2011 at 5:56 p.m., the Lakeside Fire Protection District received a call from a downed paraglider pilot who stated he was below the Blossom Gliderport and believed he was severely injured. A full rescue response was dispatched that included two engine companies, a rescue company, ALS medic unit, and a battalion chief.

Lakeside paramedics initiated advanced life support upon arriving at scene.

As Battalion Chief Ron Laff accessed the area, he could see the collapsed canopy of the victim's glider significantly below the jump-off point at the glider port. A request was made for ASTREA from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to respond and assist ground units in locating the victim. The crew from Rescue 3 and Medic 3 loaded their equipment into a four wheel drive unit and accessed the area.

The patient is hoisted to Copter 12.

A CalFire crew member, and Firefighter-Paramedic Chris Williams hang onto a "tagline" as the patient is hoisted to the helicopter. The "tagline" keeps the patient from spinning once he enters the rotor-wash from the suspended helicopter.

Once over the mountain, ASTREA was able to direct crews to the victim. On their arrival, the victim had complaints suggestive of spinal injuries and fractures. The patient was also exhibiting signs of shock. Paramedics on the scene initiated advanced life support, which included IV fluids to combat the shock.

Due to the extremely steep terrain, the decision was made to hoist the patient to a helicopter then rendezvous with a Mercy Air helicopter for transport to a trauma center. Copter 12 was dispatched to the scene and made radio contact with ground units. Once overhead, the air crews had to carefully evaluate the safest method to hoist the patient.

Mercy Air 5 lifts off for Sharp Memorial Trauma Center

A crew member was lowered to the scene and prepared the patient for the hoist operation. After the victim was safely in Copter 12, it departed the scene to land in a nearby field so the patient could be transferred to Mercy Air 5. The patient was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for evaluation in the trauma center.

Agencies assisting the Lakeside Fire District include CalFire (air and ground), San Diego Sheriff Department, and Mercy Air.

Warmer Weather Brings Out the Snakes

Lakeside: Every year as wintertime temperatures give way to the warmer weather of spring we start to see an increased presence of snakes within the community. As rattlesnakes emerge from hibernation they can initially be pretty aggressive hunters, bringing them in contact with humans as they look for food sources.

Fortunately most residents are familiar with our coldblooded intruders and have learned how to deal with these occasional intrusions, thus actual rattlesnake bites in Lakeside are a relatively infrequent event. But don't let this bolster your courage when dealing with venomous snakes. The fact remains that snake bites can cause severe medical complications, right up to death.

What many of our residents might not realize is the Lakeside Fire Protection District is outfitted to deal with snake calls. For many years the bulk of "snake calls" are sent to the fire agencies in San Diego County.

When dealing with a snake on your property it's important to remember:

Don't approach, or attempt to touch the snake.
Remove family members and animals from the immediate area.
Don't agitate the snake.
Call for help.....!

Lakeside Fire Places the New Medic 1 Into Service

In 1975, the Lakeside and Santee Fire Districts placed into service the first paramedic ambulance in San Diego County. Since then the Lakeside Fire District as been providing ALS (advanced life support) care to our community.

County Service Area 69 (CSA-69) is a joint emergency services area that Lakeside Fire District shares with the Santee Fire Department. It started with one ambulance but, as our population increased and demand escalated, it required the addition of units. The CSA now has four paramedic ambulances covering the service area.

Medic 1 is located at the Riverview fire station (FS1) and is the busiest of the four CSA-69 ambulances, averaging around 3000 calls every year. Medic 1 averages about 50,000 miles a year and with a growing call volume the mileage increases each year. Our ambulances are taken out of front line status and placed into reserve status at 150,000 miles. On Thursday, June 9, 2011 the new paramedic unit was placed into service. Firefighter/Paramedics Jamie Hazlewood and Steve Russo put the last of the equipment on the unit today and ran its first call shortly afterwards.

Defensible Space Kick Off Media Event

Lakeside, CA -

On Friday, June 10, 2011, Lakeside Firefighters participated in the kick-off media event which was a briefing held at a local Lakeside home whose property was held-up as a great example of having excellent defensible space.

Fire agencies will be out in their districts this weekend in support of homeowners who are completing their defensible space clearing (which many of us will be doing this weekend).

Fire agencies countywide will be handing out fliers explaining the requirements of the County Defensible Space Ordinance. Lakeside Fire District is a partner with the San Diego County Fire Authority in support of this worthwhile effort.

Retired San Miguel Engineer Bill Cullen Passes

San Miguel: On 6/5/2011 recently retired Fire Engineer Bill Cullen passed away at his home in Spring Valley. Bill was only 55 years old at the time of his passing.

Bill had served the East County for many years as a firefighter. Bill started his career with CDF, eventually moving to the Grossmont-Mount Helix Fire District. With the consolidation with Spring Valley, Bill crossed over to the San Miguel Consolidated Fire District. Bill completed his career there, retiring as a Fire Engineer.

Our thoughts are with the Cullen Family, and our Brothers and Sisters at the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District.

Vegetation Fire in South San Diego County

Bee Canyon -

CalFire is working a vegetation fire in the Bee Canyon area off Marron Valley Rd. south of SR94. Initial on-scene report was 15-20 acres with potential for an extended incident. The fire is being attacked with engines, water tenders, and both fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft.

Lakeside Firefighters announce winner of Rick Smith Memorial Scholarship

On June 2, 2011, the Lakeside Firefighters' Association presented the winner of the Rick Smith Memorial Scholarship at El Capitan High School's annual awards ceremony. This is the first year for this scholarship which was created by the Lakeside Firefighters' Association to honor the late R.A. "Rick" Smith who was a longtime community activist. Mr. Smith was involved in many organizations that benefited Lakeside and served for 20 years as a member of the Lakeside Fire Board.

One of the main considerations for awarding this scholarship was service to the Lakeside community. After interviewing the six outstanding students that applied for this scholarship, the Lakeside Firefighters were faced with the difficult task of choosing a winner.

This year the scholarship was awarded to El Capitan High School senior Belen Montoya. Along with excelling scholastically, Belen has spent many hours mentoring and tutoring not only her fellow students at El Cap, but also bilingual children at Riverview Elementary School. She has been active in El Cap's "Roots and Shoots" program, the Academic League, served as Vice President of the Spanish Club, and has participated in El Cap's Insight program. Belen even spent over 200 hours of her own time helping the school's Science Department move into their new building last summer! These are just a few of her many contributions and accomplishments not only as an outstanding student, but also as an outstanding member of the Lakeside community. It is with great pleasure that the Lakeside Firefighters' Association presented her with this scholarship to be used towards her college education. They are sure that it will be a great investment, not only for Belen's future but also for the future of Lakeside.

Lakeside Firefighters Test Skills above El Capitan Reservoir

Peutz Valley: Lakeside Firefighters returned to a remote location to practice technical rescue scenarios. In this situation the crews from Rescue 3 (Lake Jennings Station) and Engine 26 (Blossom Valley) were given the task of accessing a 200' deep canyon, locating a victim and returning that victim to the roadway attached to lifelines. While normally these situations are pretty routine, in this situation crews were faced with nine foot high vegetation, and large crops of poison oak.

This rescue operation is commonly know as a "Pick Off". It requires a high degree of coordination between the rescuer in the canyon, and crews above that are responsible for the safe return of both parties. But crews are initially challenged by the lack of large anchoring points (areas we attach ropes to that can withstand the loads placed on them). In this situation crews developed a complex anchoring system that distributes the load to multiple points. The attachment points for this rescue were two mature sumac bushes.

Another potential problem facing the firefighters is the possibility the victim may become panicked while being raised back up. Crews learn techniques that limits the potential for trouble in these situations. If not handled correctly the rescue can be defeated by the actions of the victim.

The firefighter and victim (in this case another firefighter) are raised back to the roadway.

Given the rugged terrain surrounding the community of Lakeside, crews practice these skills on a regular basis to stay proficient.

Lakeside Firefighters Make Quick Stop on Small Grass Fire

Lakeview -

A small grass fire near Lakeview Road and Los Coches Road brought a quick response from Lakeside Firefighters on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Heartland Communications received numerous 911 calls and an additional report from Barona Fire District Chief Sandoval (4801) who was in the area just before 4:00 p.m. Firefighters from Lakeside's Lake Jennings (fs3), Blossom Valley (fs26), and Eucalyptus Hills (fs2) fire stations quickly surrounded the 1/2 acre blaze with hoselines. While the fire came very close to nearby houses, no structures were damaged.

The Lakeside Fire District would like to remind homeowners to clear flammable vegetation around their homes and create a defensible space. Check THIS WEBSITE for more information.
